Dillie Jo SMITH sources & comments:
Dillie Jo Smith Sources
Notes by Sandra Smith Gwilliam
Dillie Jo Smith has been listed on most records as Dilly or Dillie Jo
Huckabee. I am putting all of the sources with her information together
to show why I think the maiden name on the Ancestral File is incorrect
and to show why I think her marriage certificate was correct, and that
her real name was Delilah Jo Smith.
In spite of the information on the 1860 census and her death certificate,
I am convinced from probate, marriage, cemetery and other records, that
Joseph & Minerva Ann Hall Smith are Dillie's parents. I have searched in
Texas census records county by county for Huckabee families for her
parents. There are none who could be her parents. My daughter and I
have also searched county by county for other Smith families who could be
her parents.
Time line:
1857 Delia/Delilah/Dellie/Dillie/Dilly Jo Smith was born in Rusk County,
Texas to Joseph P. Smith & Minerva Ann Hall Smith. [Information on birth
date and place is taken from her death certificate. The death
certificate does not have a mother, but it names her father as M. A.
Huckabee. I believe the M. A. Huckabee was her mother's name.]
1860 - About 1860 Joseph P. Smith died. Minerva and her three children
live next door
to Joseph Smith’s widowed mother, (Hannah Parker) where they living
during the 1860 Rusk county census. Joseph was not listed with the
family.

138 144 George Cooper 66 M Texas
138 144 Martha Thompson 65 F Ireland
[At least two of Hannah Smith’s widowed daughters-in-law are living with
or near her then. Sandra's theory: Apparently the 1860 Rusk census
taker mistook Dillia's name and thought they said "William" so he wrote
“William - 3 – M - TX” on the census record. He also made mistakes on
several other Smith family member’s names & initials and he changed the
sex of one of Hannah's grandchildren as shown on the original census.]
Ezekiel Huckabee is in the 1860 Pontotoc, Mississippi census with his
parents.

1898 - Minerva A. HUCKABEE died on 13 Jan 1898 Minerva Ann Huckabee was
buried in Sipe Springs Cemetery, Comanche Co. Texas near two of Dillie Jo
Smith's children and one grandchild. [Sandra has a photo of her
headstone]
Sandra's note: Reasons why I think Minerva Ann Huckabee is Minerva Ann
Hall Smith, wife of Joseph Smith and mother of Dillie Jo Smith.:
These do not seem to be merely coincidence:
1. There are ties to both Comanche County and Coryell County, Texas for
Minerva Ann Hall Smith and Minerva A. Smith Huckabee.
E. Huckabee married MA Smith in Coryell County, Texas in Dec 1876, then
they moved to Sipe Springs, Comanche County, Texas where they died and
were buried. This M. A. Smith is proven to be Minerva A. Smith Huckabee
from comparing census records, marriage and her tombstone.
The following children of Joseph & Minerva Ann Hall Smith had ties to
Rusk, Coryell, and Comanche Counties in Texas:
All of Joseph and Minerva Ann Hall Smith's children were born in Rusk
County, Texas: James J. Smith, Hannah Texana Smith Milner Black, Delilah
J. Smith,
James J. Smith moved to Coryell County, Texas and married there. He then
moved with his family to Comanche County, Texas where he died. He named
one of his sons, Ezekiel Hucklebee Smith.
Texana Smith, married James Black in Coryell County, Texas and according
to her obituary, she was buried in Sipe Springs Cemetery, Comanche
County, Texas where Minerva Ann Huckabee is buried.
Delia Smith has Henry Madison Smith Sr. as guardian of at least her
property in Coryell County, Texas.
Dellie Smith married H. M. Smith Jr. in Coryell County, Texas.
Six of Dillie Jo & H. M. Smith's children were born in Sipe Springs,
Comanche County, Texas.
Dillie Jo & H. M. Smith's daughters, Clara and Sarah May Smith died and
were buried in Sipe Springs Cemetery in Comanche County, Texas in the row
next to Ezekiel & Minerva A. Huckabee. James J. Smith's son, William
Edward Smith is also buried in that cemetery.
Joseph Henry Smith, the son of Henry Mattison & Dillie Jo Smith carries
the names of both of his grandfathers. Joseph Henry Smith named one of
his daughters Minerva Ann Smith.
2. Both Minerva A. Smith Huckabee and Minerva Ann Hall Smith, daughter of
John & Susannah Hall have the same birth date and state:
Minerva Ann Hall who married Joseph P. Smith, was born on 7 Sep 1829
according to the John A. Hall family Bible.
Minerva A. Huckabee was born Sept. 7, 1829 according to her headstone.
M. A. Huckabee (wife of E. A. Huckabee) was born in Tennessee according
to the1880 census.
Minerva Ann Hall Smith was born in Tennessee according to the 1850 & 1860
Rusk County, Federal Census records.

Informant: Mr. Tracker in city [I am sure it was Joseph William Tinker-
a son-in-law (husband of Veda Exa Smith Tinker-married 15 Jan 1920 in
Cedar Hill, San Juan County, New Mexico. Joseph & Veda were married
seven years before Dillie died. Dillie's mother, Minerva Ann Hall Smith
Huckabee died two years before Veda was born. Joseph Smith, Minerva's
first husband and Dillie's birth father died in 1860 in Rusk County,
Texas. Ezekiel Huckabee died when Veda was almost 18 months old, so she
wouldn't have known her grandparents. Her husband would have only known
what the children and grandchildren knew, which from the Smith family
records available, isn't too much.)].
