NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ABOUT MAYO KERSEY WILSON

"COTTON STOCKINGS BRING BACK MEMORIES"
by PAMALA J. WILLIAMS, Times-Enterprise Staff Writer

PATTEN --- To most people they look like plain old socks. The coarse homespun thread  has
yellowed with age, and the stitches in one heel have come loose, but they still look like
they'd be warm and comfortable on a cold afternoon.
For Mayo Wilson, 81, of Airline Road, the old cotton stockings, which date back at least 76
years, represent a different kind of comfort -- they bring back the memories of childhood.
Louisa Barrett of Monticello, Wilson's grandmother, was always doing something with her hands.
Often watching and waiting for a chance to help was Wilson.
"She could knit just about anything," Wilson said. "She could always  tell where I had picked
up her work."
Wilson "helped" her  grandmother do more than just knit the stockings. She shadowed along as
Barrett planted and picked the cotton, separated the seeds from the lint, combed the raw cotton
and put it on the spinning wheel.
"She would spin the cotton, get a big roll of it, and then begin to knit," said Wilson. "I
would try to help, reckon I was around 6 years old. I was just old enough to be aggravating,
but I got to where I could even do a little bit on the spinning wheel."
When Wilson got to be too aggravating she was sent outside to play with her brother and
cousin. Both boys were two years older and Wilson claims she followed them all over that
Monticello homestead.
"We stayed home with grandma on Saturdays when our parents went to town," she said."No matter
what we did grandma would never whip us --- and we would climb trees and play all over that
yard."
The three would fill empty bottles of mule tonic with the white sandy dirt they found in front
of the two-story house, and when they tired of that would run down to a field covered with pine
trees and bend the saplings and swing from them.
Once, while waiting for the boys to climb the tree and swing it down far enough for her to
reach, she watched as the trunk snapped in two.
"That was the scariest thing until I figured out nobody was hurt," she said. "It knocked the
breath out of one of them -- but when we saw he was all right we laughed and laughed."
Now grandmother of 26 and great-grandmother of 26 -- at last count and there's another
great-grandbaby on the way -- she enjoys retelling the tales of her childhood to the
youngsters.
"My grandmother died in 1928, just before my first son," she said. "None of my children ever
got to know her."
The pair of homemade stockings, which were given to Wilson after the death of her mother in
1987, are just a reminder of the lady that was and the times that were.
