Documentation: Zoe G. Jones, who lived, worked and raised her two sons in San
Diego during the past half-century, died Jan. 21 of heart failure at her Pacific
Beach home, She was 82. A native of Washington state, she raised in a small
mining town with five sisters. Her father worked as a Plumer and spent numerous
hours teaching his daughter various sports, including skiing, swimming and
basketball. Weekends in the winters, he would take his six daughters on a three-
mile uphill hike, each carrying her own skis. They climbed the hill and skied
down from sunup to sundown. At night they played basketball. Mrs. Jones
graduated from Ellensburg Normal School in 1929 with a degree in teaching. She
was offered a teaching assignment in Montana, but her father refused to let her
travel that far from the family home. She never taught school; instead, she
worked at the Todd Shipyard in Seattle in the 1930\'s. She met her husband, the
late Fred Brown, in Seattle. He worked as a machinist by day and as a musician
in a big band at night. The couple moved to San Diego in 1945 and bought a home
in Pacific Beach. The area was a sea of tomato vines dotted with an occasional
plantation home. The fields were plowed under in the next few decades to make
way for the thousand of homes that fill the area, but Mrs. Jones lived and died
in the first house she called home. Her husband died in 1951. Mrs. Jones was an
avid golfer and played at most every course in the county. She was a member of
several golf clubs, the latest membership being at Mission Bay Golf Club.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Brown of Ocean side and Brad Brown of El Cajon;
three sisters Cleo Dorich of Washington state, June Sullivan of California, and
Beryl Marshall of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and four great-
grandchildren. No services are planned. She was cremated and her ashes will be
buried in Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington. The family suggested
contributions to San Diego Hospice
