Pauley enlisted as a private for the Virginia army , age 40. Enlist date 5/27/1861 in Wytheville VA, survived. Another thing of interest that might connect Josiah to two others, Albert G. Pauley, company F, ag ?? in 1850, enlisted 5/29/61 at Wytheville, captured 1/1/62, received clothing 3rd. and 4th. quarter 1864. William G., company F, enlisted 5/29/61 at Wytheville, died from disease at White Sulphur Springs 10/27/61. Carrico Pauley in the 1890 census. I figure she must have died between 1880-1890. I have not found Josiah Pauley after to 1860 Census, so I'm assuming he died after being released from the POW prison on Johnson's Island but died before 1870. I do have in my possession a certificate from Johnson's Island Prisoner of War Depot that state's Josiah B. Pauley was recorded as a Prisoner of War at the Johnson's Island Prisoner of War Depot located in Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio. Also states he was a 2nd. Lieut. I feel sure he was one of 1,000 prisoner's (60 were officers) captured at the Battle of Piedmont. "Abstracts of School Records of Wythe Co., VA 1849-1861" by Mary B.
