He was in Milam Guards, Mounted Volunteers, Milam County, 27th Brigade. He and his brother, John, enlisted on the Cameron Courthouse Square on June 16, 1861. He gained the rank of Lieutenant and wrote a diary about his travels and war experiences. That diary has been transcribed by his great, great grandaughter and there is now a copy in the Hillsboro Confederate Research Library and at Texas A & M in the library, being used for research purposes.
