In 1867 they lived with Samuel's widowed mother in Daingerfield, Texas. In late summer of that year, they moved to Marion County and lived in a log cabin while building "Woodland Home". Samuel was a professor of mathematics at Chapel Hill College in Daingerfield about 1865 and he established Paradise Academy near Jefferson in 1867. His daughters were educated at Ward Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee.
