On the 1850 census he and his wife both list their places of birth as unknown. On the 1860, 70, and 80 census', he says that he's from Tennessee. Then, in 1900, he says he's from Mississippi. Family legends, however, say he came from Tennessee. No one knows for sure why he came to Texas or when, but my father says he remembers hearing he was running from a wife. An uncle says he remembers hearing that he had a fall out with his father, so he left home never to return. Either way, and for whatever reason, he first pops up on the map in 1850 in Panola County, Texas, when he married his first wife, Elizabeth Anderson. He is listed that year as a farmer. In 1860 Jim is living in McLennan County, Texas, west of the Brazos River. He is working as a Teamster. Some family stories say that he was a cowboy and drove wagons on the Chisholm Trail, that he lived and worked all over Texas, but I have no proof of this. He DID move around alot, though. In 1870 he is still living in McLennan, but is married to a different woman, Susan. I think Elizabeth died sometime between 1863 and 1867. Possibly from complications due to childbirth, when Charlotte was born. In the early 1870's Jim and family move to Calcasieu, Louisiana. On the 1880 census his occupation is listed as Timbering. There is no occupation listed in 1900, but at this time he was widowed and living with Thomas and Reese. In 1909 he died and was buried in Vidor, Texas. I'm not sure if he was living in Vidor at the time, or why he was buried here. I can find no death certificate for him and I have no idea who his parents were, although his father could have been a "Zechariah" Taylor. Also, there may be some connection with the Taylor family of Rockbridge, Virginia during the revolution. Five Taylor brothers, revolutionary war soldiers, came over to Va from Ireland. James, John, George, Caufeld were the four who survived the war. Many of these brothers married women with the last name Paul and some moved to Tennessee.
