 Documentation: From a copy of a letter dated 14 Feb. 1995 to Liz Howard
from Rose Mary Bishop McGowen, (wife of Milton Lee McGowen), she states.
"We understand that Grandpa James was married twice. His second marriage
was to Esther Caroline Bakker. Do you know anything about his first wife,
if they had children?" (Rose Mary send a copy of of this letter to me,
Marian.) Also in this same letter Rose states that Benjamin's middle name
was "Caswell" and that is how he spelled it, but they were told that it
was spelled Casselle, Cozzell, Cassell, etc.. Benjamin's father and
grandfather has the same name. Was one a Sr. and one a Jr.?
I have found a marriage record for a JAMES McGOWEN nad MARY CARTWRIGHT,
married in Sumner Co., TN on 23 May 1827 by William McCall. Could this be
the first wife of J. C. McGowen.????
Have pictures of gravesite.
DuVal has marriage of James C. McGowen as 13 February 1874 in Freestone
Co., TX. I have not located that marriage record. According to the 1900
census, they would have been married abt. 1870. ????
