"The writer of this sketch was born in Wilson Co, Tenn. on April 19, 1880, son of Hugh Mac Midgett and Sarah C. Midgett. The second of five children.
In the fall of 1882, his parents and family with a caravan left Tenn seeking homes in the "Western Empire in the vacinity (sic) of Springfield Missouri. Disinheartened by a near fatal accident while crossing the St. Francis River and continued rains, muds and mountains, the caravan circled a large tree and started back. We Midgett families went back by Southern Ill. to visit Grandmother Midgett's sister family John and Parker White. [my Notes: This is the Badgett family - Parker was Arrinda Parker Badgett.] They decided to stay so lived in Williamson Co. for sixteen years. In 1898, H. M. Midgett and family, W. N. Midgett and family, Mrs. H. M. Midgett's father and mother, Mrs. & Mr. L. E. Buchanan and brothers E. J. and R. T. Buchanan and families came to Texas and settled in the Fordtran Community of Victoria County
The son, L. D. Midgett, had been attending high school in Marion, ILL and being somewhat interested in some of the high school lassies, naturally did not take well to the idea of coming to Texas, hence became rather sour about the matter. When his father offered to send him to a high school for another year as he had done with the older brother, L. D. bloated. The father then offered a horse, cow and a little cash and L. D. foolishly accepted. However, in 1900, he attended a Summer Normal in Victoria conducted by Prof. Colston of Cuero and Arthur Lefevra Suft of Victoria Schools and obtained his first Teachers Certificate.
He began his teaching career at the Garrett (first called the Fordtran) School. The school was on a high rolling prairie about a mile from the closest homes.
The first two weeks were trying indeed. There were only 2 pupils - a boy - 15 and his nephew 8 years old. However, when the cotton got picked, more pupils came and he had an interesting little school of 20 odd pupils.
We had good opportunities for nature study. Prairie chickens in School grounds. Sandhill cranes near and one day two wolves passed within fifty yards of the school house.
The teacher came near losing his head and heart to a little Swede girl Clara but was rescued by Minnie Bell Brady whom he married in October 1901." (10, 14, 28, 29, 30).
