He had a store and a hotel and was a riverboat captain. He also served as sheriff of Jefferson County and in other county offices. Cave was a close associate of Captain George O'BRIEN of Beaumont, and they were related by marriage. Cave planted an oak switch in Beaumont that he had brought from Village Creek. The switch grew into a huge tree that was called the "O'BRIEN Oak" because it grew in front of George O'BRIEN's house. O'BRIEN had bought the house from Cave JOHNSON. The tree is no longer standing. During the Civil War, Cave JOHNSON and GEORGE O'BRIEN served in "Spaight's Battalion" for the Confederacy. After the war, Cave Johnson was appointed to make sure that freed slaves were being treated fairly. Cave JOHNSON of Beaumont was the nephew of Postmaster General Cave JOHNSON (of Tennessee), who served in the Polk administration. Cave JOHNSON of Beaumont was the grandson of General Thomas JOHNSON of Tennessee, who fought with Andrew Jackson during the Indian Wars and the War of 1812. Cave and family were in the Jefferson County census records for 1850 and 1860. By 1870, they were enumerated in Hardin County, so it is assumed that Margaret Lillian was born there, and that Cave and Margaret Elizabeth died there.
