Thomas lived near Cedar Glades in Garland Co, Arkansas when he met his future wife, Francis Rosalie Carter. she had moved from the state of Georgia with her family. Francis was the daughter of Jarm Carter and Mary Walker Carter. She had a brother, Samuel, and a sister Lucy. Thomas and Francis were married October 04, 1866, in Mount Ida, Montgomery Co, Arkansas. Thomas. Francis, Jasper and Thomas Hanby moved to Texas in a covered wagon pulled by oxen in approximately 1873. They settled in the "flat" at Andice, Texas. Tom worked on a ranch for Strayborne and Washington for $.50 per day.

They farmed and raised cattle, A few miles to the west of the little house on the hill, the "Old Jackson Home Place" was built. Most of Texas born children were born in this house. Several of the sons and their families lived in the first little house on the hill. Thomas and Francis were saddened by the loss of two more children.
