"JOHN EDWARDS FATALLY WOUNDED IN SHOOTING AFFRAY AT CARDIFF"
Shot Alleged to Have Been Intended for John Ingram Pierces Aged Man's Skull
--------------------------------------------
John EDWARDS, an aged and respected citizen of Cardiff neighborhood, is at Chamberlain Memorial Hospital suffering from a pistal wound in the head, and Tom CARTER, a son of Esquire Thomas CARTER, is out on bond
charged with the offense. The shooting occured late Sunday afternoon, and resulted from an affray in which John INGRAM and his son, Jack INGRAM and young CARTER were said to have been engaged. Reports of the difficulty vary and of course conflicting.
Young CARTER had been employed at one of the ore slopes and the Roane Iron Co. in the Cardiff section and
recently had quit his job by reason of the fact that certain bonuses that had been in effect were cut off. John
INGRAM was in charge of the iron slope and when CARTER quit his job it was given to INGRAM'S son, Jack. From
this the feelings from the INGRAMS and CARTER it is said to have started. Sunday afternoon CARTER is said to have
went to the mines and in a threatening manner cursed the INGRAMS out. Later when they left the mines in a car they
had to pass the CARTER home to reach their own. As they cane down the road they again encountered CARTER,
so the statement goes, who made threatening demonstrations and a shooting affray was only averted by the
timely appearance of Squire CARTER who took his son in charge and back to the house. Later in the evening
John INGRAM went to his garage and cranked his car. As he backed out CARTER opened up with a rifle and while
several bullets passed through various parts of the car none struck Mr. INGRAM. About this time Jack INGRAM
appeared on the scene and fired three or four loads at CARTER. The shells were loaded with small shots and only
four entered CARTER'S body. Some of his front teeth was shot out, and three shots entered his head, lodging
just under the skin. Mr. EDWARDS, who is past 70 years of age, and who had been out looking for his cow,
approached just as the shooting was just at its heights, and one bullet, supposed to have been fired by CARTER
struck the aged man in the forward and almost passed entirely through his head. He was taken to the hospital
immediately and although an effort was made to locate the bullet, it was unsucessful. At this time this was
written (wednesday) the aged man was still alive, although no hopes are entertained for his recovery..
Trephining has been resorted to and the pressure on the brain redieved but owing to his advanced age
there is little hope for his recovery. Mr. EDWARDS is the father of Mrs. C.C. TAYLOR of this city and Mrs. George BARNETT o f Chattanooga. Besides his two daughters he also has two sons.
(More about CARTERS bond that I will omit)
Another report about the affray has it that Mr. EDWARDS came up and inquired what the trouble was about and
undertook to quiet young CARTER when he remarked with an oath that the old man had nothing to do with it and that he would take a shot at him, which he did. Also that CARTER kicked the old man after he was down. All of this is rumered only and the true facts will probaby not be known until the preliminary trial is held.
Much sympathy is expressed for "Squire Tom CARTER. He is one of our best citizens, is a member of the county court and is held in the highest esteem by everyone. Young Tom CARTER is a fine fellow, and so far as is known has never been in trouble of any kind. It is stated that on this Sunday he was drinking, and this no doubt accounts for his wild actions on that day. The whole affair is ungreatable in the highest extreme, as all the parties concerned are of the best f amilies of the county.

" Rockwood Times" Oct. 14, 1920
TRIAL POSTPONED AGAIN
The preliminary trial of Tom CARTER,Jr., which was scheduled to be held in Rockwood Monday was postponed
one week owing to the fact that "Squire WALLER of the South Side who was to sit with "Squire SMITH and GRANT
in the case, could not be present. John EDWARDS who was shot by CARTER in the affray at Cardiff, continues to
improve and there is every indication that he will finally recover.
