He was a Lieutenant in the SC militia during the Revolutionary War. Barbara was widowed as a young woman and raised her family of four children at her inherited estate near Silver Bluff in old Barnwell County. She was reputed to be very intelligent and well-educated by the school with tutors provided by her father.
