10. Obituary of Levi PINKERTON "York Gazette", York, PA, March 24, 1892, Vol X, No 1363, 
    Thursday Morning, front page: LEVI PINKERTON - DEAD  Mr. Levi Pinkerton of 514 East King 
    Street died yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock.  Had Mr. Pinkerton lived two months 
    longer he would have reached the 77th milestone to his life.   Mr. PINKERTON had long 
    been known to the market people of Centre Square as the proprieter of the coffee bar and 
    the manufacturer of his famous tonic pop or beer.  Mr. Pinkerton was a member of the Duke  
    Street Methodist Church.  About a year ago, Mr. Pinkerton fell on the ice and broke his 
    right arm and this and the death of his aged wife and companion were hard trials to the 
    aged man and to his friends he never seemed to rally from the combined shock.  Only about 
    the beginning of the New Year did he become disable and unable to be out..."

    PINKERTON, p661-662:  Excerpts: Levi PINKERTON born in 1815, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  
    Levi's father was a miller by trade.  Married Catherine Ollise in 1837 and had eight 
    children.  Became successful coal prospector, mine boss in Schuylkill County, harrassed by 
    Molly Maguires.  "His first wife having been frightened to death by the Mollies who stoned 
    his house."  Married Augustine Harner, 1860. "...having been crippled in one limb from 
    falling from a high trestle some years before at the mines, he turned his attention to 
    business, and the following spring started to attend the Market at Center Square."    1868 
    - moved to York with four surviving children: Harriet, John W., William W., and George McC.  
    1869 - Started business with son, George McC selling hot coffee.  Started to manufacture 
    ice cream, factory at 539 East King Street.  Ice cream sold in small blocks, wrapped in 
    paper, and vended on the streets by boys at  one cent a block.  Son, George invented a
    machine to mold and cut the blocks cheaply and quickly turning out over two thousand blocks 
    per hour.  1892 - Levi Pinkerton died.  1900 - George McC PINKERTON married Mrs. Harriet C. 
    (nee Mason) KING.  One step-son, Edward M. KING."

    who lived for the past 30 years with his stepson, and wife, Mr/Mrs Edward M. King, 1401 First 
    avenue died this morning at the Einsig Convalescent home.  He was 93 years old.  The stepson 
    is the only survivor.  The deceased started and for many years operated an ice cream business 
    at 539 East King street which he moved later to East Market Street.  He was a member of the 
    First Methodist congregation.  Fraternally, he was affiliated with Sandilands commandery, 
    Knights of Malta; Humane Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Junior Order United 
    American Mechanics.  The body was removed to the Guy B. Creep funeral home 849 East Market 
    Street."

    there was established a public office in Halifax called the War Office so called because it 
    was used as a recruiting station during the second war with England.  At the close of the war

*Biographical source: "History of Dauphin County", p661-662 states that to Levi PINKERTON and 
Catherine Ollise "eight children were born". (Documentation was found for 8 named children, however 
the 1840 census has 1 girl under 5, so it can not be Harriet who was not born until 1842.)

came from communication with Paul W. PINKERTON a distant cousin (now deceased), and his daughter 
Helen P. RYDELL, who in 1984-1990 worked on mapping the various branches of Pinkerton cousins.
