  13. Obit of Selim S. "Pop" THOMAS "Lebanon Daily News" Vol. 28, No 230, April 26, 1899, p1: "Death of Selim S. THOMAS - Word received here that he died at Mifflin Today - Had Been on a Fishing Trip - and left here less than a week ago - He was a Veteran of the Rebellion - Took Prominent Part in Politics a Number of Years Ago This morning John W. Hartman, of the New Lebanon Brewing Company, received a telegram from Mifflin, Juniata County, announcing the death of Selim S. THOMAS, better known throughout the State as "Pop" THOMAS. His death occurred at 8 o'clock this morning. Only a week ago when the legislature adjourned Selim S. THOMAS, stopped off at the capital and greeted many acquaintances on his way to Juniata County whither he had gone to spend several weeks fishing with friends. During the past six months deceased had rooms at the Lebanon Valley House and on account of failing health remained indoors all winter. He, however, was about the hotel until he left for Juniata County and was at all times the life of the well known hostelry, where his presence will be greatly missed. More than a quarter of a century ago deceased came here from Philadelphia and for many years was engaged as an ornamental painter for the late Joseph BOWMAN, furniture dealer, on North Ninth Street. He always was a staunch Republican and interested himself in local politics to such an extent that about twelve years ago he was elected Justice of the Peace of the Fifth and Sixth Wards (1879, 1880, 1883, 1884), which office he held until the office of alderman was created in the Fifth Ward, when he was succeeded by the late Albert GARRETT. He had become a leading factor in politics in the northern part of the city. About five years ago his wife died and was buried at Harrisburg. Later he went to Juniata County where he made his permanent home, visiting this city on different occasions. He owns a house on Lehman Street. Prior to coming here deceased was a member of a prominent fire company in Philadelphia and was known throughout the state as one of the most popular firemen. After being here some time he became an active member of the Liberty Fire Company, of which he was later elected President. Deceased was also an ex-chief of the local fire department, ex-president of the State Volunteer Firemen's Association, and at various times was a delegate to firemen's conventions, local and state. He was also a prominent member of the Goose Neck Club, a social degree of the state firemen, and was its' Chief Gander for some time. Deceased went to the front during the Rebellion and was a prominent GAR man, having been a member of Post 42, GAR. About thirty years, he joined Williamson Lodge No 307, Free and Accepted Masons of Womelsdorf, and the same year became a member of Hermit Commandery No 24, Knights of Templar, this city of which he was a member at the time of death. He was one of the commandery oldest members. He was also a member of A.A.O.N.M.S., a degree of the Masons. He was of a jovial disposition, a ready talker, kind and friendly, and had many friends, who regret his death. It is not known as yet where he will be buried, but likely either at Harrisburg or Philadelphia. Several sisters of the deceased reside in the latter city. He was about 72 years of age. The cause of death could not be learned today."

  * Harold L. PINKERTON, Sr. Genealogy Source Notebook "HORNER/PINKERTON/THOMAS". Harold is the great-great grandson of George PINKERTON and Margaret WRIGHT of Tremont, Pennsylvania.
  * The inspiration for PINKERTON Genealogy by Harold L. PINKERTON and his daughter, Sharon P. WAYLAND came from communication with Paul W. PINKERTON (1915-1990) a distant cousin, and his daughter Helen P. RYDELL, who in 1984- 1990 worked on mapping the various branches of PINKERTON cousins descended from Hugh PINKERTON (1767-1852).
  * The Federal Census Data reported in this Family Group Sheet was culled from the Heritage Quest On-Line Database.
  * One of the descendants of George A. PINKERTON who received a share of the estate of Sarah L. PINKERTON THOMAS was Harold Leroy PINKERTON, Sr.
  * There is an error in spelling of "SELIM" on the Civil War Card File Index, listing his name incorrectly as "Selam".
