Joel Jefferson Johnson came to the United States of America with two
brothers
from Scotland or Ireland by ship arriving in Wilmington, North Carolina.
He
was Scoth-Irish descendant as far as can be determined. One brother
settle
near Delco, North Carolina, the other brother settled near Wendll,
North
Carolina. At this time, no other information is available concerning
the two
brothers or their families.
Joel settled in McDaniel Township, Sampson County, North Carolina,
approximately 1-1/2 miles from what is now known as Parkersburg, Sampson
County, North Carolina.
His education is not known, however, he became a successful farmer of
timber,
turpentine and skilled in making tar.
He married Susan Swann Tatum, January 5, 1836, daughter of Dixon and
Elizabeth
Tatum. They were large land owners and also owned several salves.
A wedding gift to Susan from her parents was a feather bed, a milch
cow, three
slaves and some chickens.
