Documentation: ALL members of this family were born "CHAMPENOIS".  Before
1850, Thomas(father) and Andrew(son) had changed the spelling, and all
members used the new spelling.  In 1849, Elizabeth and her husband, James
BEST, moved to Dane County, WI. (William and Peter had died before
1849)but Mercy and most of the remaining children went also. Thomas and
Andrew remained in New Jersey. Sources: Journals kept by my

History Centers, Church records and a history of the CHAMPENOIS-
SHAMPANORE families compiled and edited by another CHAMPENOIS descendant,
Mr. Leland FRANCOIS and his sister, Lois FRANCOIS-FREE.  There are many
variations in spelling the name now but they all descended from the
original emigre' Daniel CHAMPENOIS, a Huguenot, from Niort, France in the
early 1700's.
