John Mather Austin, a Universalist clergyman, at the home of her sister Adeline Wood in New York City. But the relationship did not work out for her, and she deserted him only a few months afterward. Ten years later, Austin secured a divorce in Indianapolis, IN on the grounds of that desertion. At some point Eliza resumed the use of her birth name, and the marriage is not mentioned in her obit, which referred to her as Miss Eliza Richardson.
