Obit: TOBE STEWART, PIONEER RESIDENT DIED EARLY TODAY;
Roswell Daily Record, Aug 3, 1940.
Tobe Stewart a well known pioneer resident of Roswell, died early this morning after an illness of several months. Coming to New Mexico in 1896, he had lived here ever since. In early days, he drove cattle thru the Pecos Valley, and later became chief of police of Roswell, serving ably under Bill Atkinson's administration as mayor. For many years he has served as merchant's policeman here, and was active in that work until the time of his illness. His circle of friends was large, and he will be greatly missed. He was highly respected and his word was as good as his bond. He was born in Vernon (Wilbarger Co) TX in 1862. He is survived by one son, Deam Stewart, captain of the Roswell police force, one daughter, Nola Stewart Eppers, one brother (John Troy) residing in Oklahoma and a sister residing in Texas. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:30 at the Talmage Memorial Chapel. Music will be provided from the choir of that church. Casket bearers will be: Frank Young, Perry Bean, Marcus Jones, E.L. Berry, O.M. Powers and Charles Dabbs. Interment will be made at South Park.
