ALL children in this family were born with the name
CHAMPENOIS. By 1850, Thomas(father) and Andrew Jackson(son)had changed
the spelling to SHAMPANORE. The new spelling was used by all. Peter and
William had died before 1849.  In 1849, Mercy, her daughter Elizabeth,her
husband, James BEST and most of the children moved to Dane Co, WI. Thomas
and their son, Andrew remained in New Jersey. Sources:Elizabeth
Virginia(Andrew's granddaughter) kept daily journals. Also, LDS Family
History Library film and U.S. census. A lot of information from a book
compiled by a descendant of Elizabeth CHAMPENOIS-BEST, Leland FRANCOIS
and his sister, Lois. There are many variations of the spelling of this
name in existence.  And all are descended from the first known emigrant,
Daniel CHAMPENOIS of Niort, France in the early 1700's.
