There are many variations in the spelling of this surname.
But all are believed to descend from the original emigre`, Daniel
CHAMPENOIS, a Huguenot from Niort, France. With his son, Daniel and their
families, they came in the early 1700's and settled in the area of New
Rochelle, NY. My sources from notes,letters, journals and pictures of my
grandmother, Elizabeth Virginia SHAMPANORE-CRATE, and the granddaughter
of George Webster SHAMPANORE. Also, from a history of the CHAMPANOIS-
SHAMPANORE's compiled and edited by another descendant, Mr. Leland
FRANCOIS and his sister, Lois FRANCOIS-FREE. Other sources, Church
