BIOGRAPHY: Jacob J. Whitaker (great grandfather of Thomas Henry Whitaker) was born in 1785 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Mary Polly Reading, daughter of Thomas Reading and Mary Holloway. Jacob and Mary lived in Orange County, North Carolina on a parcel of land he inherited from his father. From 1810 -1830 he was selling and purchasing land. One of Jacobs' brothers William had a large plantations and remained in Orange County, North Carolina. Jacob left Orange County, North Carolina with his four sons and two daughters. sometime around 1832 and traveled over the Cumberland Mountains and stopped in Santa Fe which is just outside of Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee. All of his sons are listed in the 1840-1850 census. William, son of Jacob, married in Maury County. Thomas Warren, fourth son of Jacob, moved to Missouri. in 1855 with his family. He died in 1856 and was buried in Jasper County, Missouri . In 1857 Robert, first son of Jacob also moved to Missouri,. and he died in 1886. Abraham, second son stayed in Maury County alone with two sisters who were married. Jacob J. Whitaker died about 1847 in Maury County Tennessee and is buried on a hill known as Dockery Cemetery. The cemetery is over grown with large trees and there is no sign indicating this is Dockery Cemetery. Down below the cemetery is a fallen down log cabin where his son Abraham lived. William moved to Wayne county around the early 1860's. .
