1. 1870 census: July 1870, Bourbon Co., Paris Twp., Kentucky.(9) Film
#0545946 (2nd) Pg. 380 - Andrew, age 30 and Mary Anna, age 26 listed
with child, Minnie (looks like Nannie on this census), age 2. Andrew's
personal estate is valued at $5,000. No Real Estate value listed.

2. 1880: June 1880, Dog Fennel Prec., Fayette Co., Kentucky.(9) Film
#1254412. A.W. Smith, age 40 is living with wife Mary Anna, age 36.
Their 12 year old daughter, Minnie is with them as well as son Burgess,
age 9; Sallie, age 7; David, age 5; Willis, age 1 and Andrew's mother,
Susan Smith, age 78.
The discovery of this census record was difficult because Andrew's name
has been incorrectly identified in the index as N.W. Smith, instead of
A.W.
It was this census record that led us to the true birth year of David
Harp Smith, after assuming him to be 10 years younger based on the
incorrect age indication on the 1910 MO census. It also confirmed the
link between the Wheat family and Andrew W. Smith.
Also listed down the street from Andrew and Mary Anna is Minnie's
maternal grandmother:
Mary E. Harp, age 55 and children Alice, age 27; James, age 22; Della,
age 15 and Ada, age 13. James is listed as a farmer.

at 55471 Richard Way, Bend, OR 97707-2536.

4. Probate file: 1938, Webb City, Jasper Co., Missouri.(13) Sallie's file
lists all of her children: Rena Rickman; Clyde R. Metsinger; E. E.
Metsinger; Cleta Metsinger and Nadeen Poole and their addresses at the

5 M David Harp Smith
Born: 28 January 1875 - Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, USA

Events
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Map: of Mount Hope Cemetery, Jasper County, Webb City, Missouri.(17)
Visit to the cemetery revealed that David H. Smith's grave is without a
stone.

2. 1880 census: 16 June 1880, Dog Fennel Prec., Fayette Co.,
Kentucky.(18) David is listed with his family. He is 5 years old. Harp
relatives are listed nearby.

3. He was born on 1885 in Kentucky, USA.(19, 20) 1910 census for MO,
Jasper Co., Carterville City, V. 52; ED 59, indicates the above
information. It is incorrect, as verified by the 1880 census as well as
the Homestead documents for David H. Smith from North Dakota, 1906 and
the 1880 census, which shows him as five years old.

4. 1900 Census: Not able to find David H. Smith as of yet, 2 June 1900,
Missouri, Barton Co., Doylesport Twp..(21) Found David's parents at age
60 and 56. Children at home are: Waller, Robert L. an Willis. David is not living with them. Have searched other states for him. Will continue search.

5. Application for Homestead: at the Devils Lake, North Dakota U.S. Land
Office, 29 November 1901, Devils Lake, Ramsey, North Dakota.(22) David H. Smith appeared in person at the office of the US Commissioner of ND to swear that he was over 21 years of age and not the proprietor of more than 160 acres of land in any State or Territory and that his intent was to make actual settlement on the homestead property he was applying for. His application is #26488 and describes the legal description of his land as East 1/2 Northwest 1/4 and lots 1 & 2 of Section 7, in Twp. 155 of Range 78, containing 151.32 acres.

6. Payment for Homestead property: 2 December 1901, McHenry County,
Granville, North Dakota.(22) David H. Smith pays $13.80 for his 151.32
acres. I need to investigate why he was short of 160 acres by 8.68 acres.

7. Residence established: on homestead property, 1 April 1902, McHenry
County, Granville, North Dakota.(22) David gives this date in his
testimony for his homestead's final proof. He tells that his house was
built then and it measured 14' x 22', slightly smaller than his barn,
which was 16' x 24'. He also had a granary 12' x 14' and a 14' deep well.

8. Marriage: 7 March 1905, Towner, Mchenry County, North Dakota.(15)
Marriage Certificate shows date of birth of D. H. Smith "of Granville,
ND" to Miss Gertrude Brown "of New York City, NY." Witnesses were Eli
Horner "of Granville, ND" and one other that seems to say E.E. Ellis of
Towner, ND.

9. Photo: on front porch of 308 N. Pearl St., Cir 1906, Jasper County,
Carterville, Missouri.(23) This photo seems like a family photo although
the people have yet to be identified. David H. Smith is second from the
left. Others are probably his brothers, their wives and the Smith
parents and grandfather. Need to confirm.

10. Final Proof: for homestead patent, 10 December 1906, Devils Lake,
Ramsey, North Dakota.(22) Final payment was received -- $3.80. Testimony of Witness given by Robert Graham, age 39 of Granville, ND and William L. (W.L.) Horner, age 36, of Granville, ND.

11. An attempt for a cure: 6 May 1909, Hot Springs, Arkansas.(24)
Postcard sent from the Eastman Hotel, which looks VERY nice, was written
from David H. to his wife, Mrs. D. H. Smith in Carterville, MO. He says
he has "taken 6 baths and can't see any change in myself." He says he
"may move."

12. Postcard: 26 June 1909, Carterville, Jasper Co., Missouri.(25)
Postcard from Gertie to her husband, David was written while he was
traveling around the country seeking a cure for his arthritis. The
address is different than the Eastman Hotel postcard sent by David the
month prior. Carolyn Coleman sent this copy to me and has the original.

13. Postcard from New York: 25 September 1909, New York, New York.(26)
David's Aunt Ada sends a postcard postmarked Brooklyn, New York. The
picture on the front is of the Empire Building, NY City. She says that
she "will be starting back soon now" and "will only stay a day in
Washington." This may be a clue to some sort of connection to the Smiths
in New York City. Will need to investigate further.

14. 1910 Census: April 1910, Joplin Township, Carterville, Jasper County,
MO.(27) Film #1374804 - Found Andrew and Mary Ann living with son David,
(incorrectly identified as age 25) age 35; David's wife, Gertrude H., age 33 and their child, Minnie Annie, age 3.
Andrew and Mary Ann's son, Willis Wheat, age 31 is also living there. He is listed as a Water Wagon driver.
A boarder is also listed - Loyd Ruder, age 16. He also says he's a water wagon driver.
The address is 606 N. Tennessee Ave.

15. Plat Maps: of McHenry County, 1910, McHenry County, Granville, North
Dakota.(28) Copied all of the townships in the book, although some are
missing for the county. Was able to locate David H. Smith's homestead on the edge of Rosehill Twp., bordering Granville Twp. Nearby were: his
brother, J.B. "Jack" Burgess Smith; Robert W. Graham, who was a witness
at David's final patent hearing; William L. Horner (2 properties in this
name), who was also a witness at David's final patent hearing; Eli
Horner, who GHB stayed with upon arrival from NYC prior to her wedding
day, and an unknown John W. Smith. Also, Horace Bagley, relationship
unknown, and others. There is a discrepency between the plat maps and
the BLM records, however. Needs verification.

16. Last Will and Testament: 11 January 1911, Carterville, Jasper Co.,
Missouri.(29, 30) David wrote his will on the above date. It was entered into probate on 3 December 1913. Gertrude Brown Smith was the
Executress. Witnesses were listed as Jess W. Stewart; J. H. Webb and J.
S. Bishop.

17. Trip to Texas: February 1912, Pipe Creek, Texas.(31) Postcard written to "Aunt Ada" (Ada Harp) by D.H. Smith states that they "left MO three weeks ago and came to Texas for my health." He says he has not improved any yet and that they are on a ranch 36 miles from San Antonio.
Ada Harp must have brought this postcard to Mary Frances Van Hee in later years.

18. He was buried in Webb City, Missouri in 1913.(14, 32) Mr. Walter L.
Stapleton, caretaker of the Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City informed us
that David Harp Smith's gravesite is at the southwest part of the
cemetery: Block 2, Lot 9, Space 1.
When Gertie Myers and Dave Van Hee and Carolyn Coleman visited the
cemetery, Mr. Stapleton paced off the ground to show them the location,
since there is not a gravestone. He is buried next to another man named
Smith who died on the same day as David Harp, but was much older. Gertie took a picture of this gravestone and I have yet to see it.

19. Sale of Homestead: 10 October 1913, Jasper County, Carterville,
Missouri.(33) David H. and Gertrude H. Smith sell the homestead property
to the Stubbins Land and Loan Company for $1800, minus a mortgage of $600 and a commission mortgage.

20. He died on 18 November 1913 in Jackson Township, Jasper County,
Missouri.(14, 34) Received David Harp Smith's death certificate from
Jefferson City, MO. David died at R.F.D. #4 in Jackson Township.
Carthage was written in as the city of death and then crossed out. He
was 38 years, 9 months and 19 days old on the day he died. Mrs. D.H.
Smith (Gertrude H.)'s address is listed as R.F.D. #4, Carthage, MO.
David Harp Smith is buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City, MO.
Cause of death is listed as "Rheumatism (chronic articular)" of a four
year duration. His parents are listed as A.W. Smith and Anna Harp.

I have a probate letter written to Gertrude H. Smith after David H.
Smith's death, naming her the executer of his will. It is dated 3
December 1913. The envelope it is in is postmarked from Carthage, MO c.
February 192_ (unable to read the year completely).

21. His obituary was published on 20 November 1913 in Carterville, Jasper
Co., Missouri.(19) Clipping from The Carthage Press describes death of
David Harp Smith.

22. Proof of Will: 3 December 1913, Jasper County, Carterville,
Missouri.(35) Proof of Will included in the probate papers, as well as
the actual Last Will and Testament, the 1st semi-annual settlement
papers, the Inventory of all Real and Personal property, the Affidavits
of Appraisers and Executor and the certificate of Witnesses.

After the death of Davis Metsinger in 1925, Davis's daughter, Cleta

Apparently Willis's sister, Sallie, widow of Davis had a "good offer from another fellow with the cash but Uncle Willis begged for it, that he needed it so bad so Mamma just couldn't refuse him... Times got hard and he didn't pay, owed her well over a thousand dollars."
