"From Cherokee By Blood, Record of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in US court of Claims 1906-1910 by Jerry Wright Jordan. Heritage Book Vol. #8. Mary E. Keys, Murraysville, GA Rejection. Proof of genuine connection with the Eastern Cherokee insufficient. It appears that no ancestor was a party to the treaties of 1835-36 or 1846. No ancestor was ever enrolled. Misc. test. page 996. "My name is Mary C. Keys and I reside at Murraysville, GA. I was born in Cherokee Co., NC in 1846. I claim through my mother, Malinda Voils, whose father was James Voils was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My mother was born in Hall Co., GA about 1811. My grandfather, James Voils was born in the eastern section of Tennessee, near the NC line. My mother was born and raised among the Cherokee Indians and could speak the Cherokee language. The Indians often visited our homeplace and my mother was recognized by them as a Cherokee Indian. I can remember my grandfather very well and he was always talking about his people, who he claimed were Cherokee people. My grandfather often told me about the time the Indians left this country and said he wouldn't go because my grandmother, who was a white woman, wouldn't let him. My grandfather had two brothers, James Voils and Jehu Voils. I have cousins by the name of Voils who are descendants of James Voils and Jehu Voils and the l! ast I heard of them they lived in Arkansas. I had two brothers, namely, James Stumans and George Stumans. My mother had several brothers, namely, James Voils, Samuel Voils, Washington Voils and Mary Voils. My mother's brothers all went west. My grandfather moved to Cherokee Co., NC with his people and lived there all his life. I do not know whether he was enrolled or not, and grandfather would often go off with the Indians and stay several months and then return. He was always taken as Indian because his looks and appearance indicated that he was an Indian. Signed: Mary C. "X" Keys, Gainsville, GA July 7, 1908. Exception Case 22405 Mary C. Keys, Murraysville, GA. Rejected. Total number of exceptions filed in this group=1. Original recommendation renewed.
