Notes For Amanda:
* From Jane Clayton at: JRnJANE@msn.com in 2003:
"I have contacted some of the descendents of Amanda Banks, but I don't know too many. Even though my family was born and raised in Alcorn County, they left for Texas when I was a baby and I was raised there. Most of the older family members have died. My mother and elderly aunt are all that are still living. My mother was only 7 when Elizabeth Voyles died. She still remembers her. She said Elizabeth had one black dress with white bottoms and that she was a small woman with dark hair. She always wore a bonnet and would smoke a corn cob pipe! Amanda was a larger woman with dark hair. They knew her as Amanda Voyles, guess they thought her maiden name was Voyles since her mother's was Voyles. I'm sure that my grandmother Nettie Thomas (Amanda's daughter) knew. But Nettie died in 1956."
* Book 6 1855-56 Old Tish. Co., MS Probate Court To the Honorable County Arnold Judge of the Probate Court of the County of Tishomingo and State of Mississippi.
The petition of J.D. Latch shows to your Honor that Wm. Banks died in July 1853 leaving and surviving him his only child infant daughter Amanda Jane Banks who resides in said county. That as the child and heir at law of her said father she is entitled to an estate in cash of a small sum not exceeding fifty dollars and that she is further entitled with her mother Elizabeth since intermarried with your petitioner to a County land warrant for forty acres. Your petitioner is advised that a legal Guardian be appointed for the protection of the interest of said minor therein. That said infant resides with your petitioner and her said mother.
Your petitioner being desirous to protect and promote the Interest of his said step daughter therefore prays that Letters of Guardianship be granted to him upon the estate of said Infant according to the provisions of the Statute, and as in duty Bound he will ever pray & c.
Sworn to and subscribed before me this Dec. 10th 1855.
