Lawrence Chunn
Lawrence Chunn, age 67, passed away at the local hospital on April 10. The funeral and burial was at Jacobs Chapel on Wednesday morning, April 11, conducted by Rev. Felix A. Sutphin, of Blue Mountain, pastor. Mr. Chunn was a well known citizen of that community who was highly respected by all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Chunn; the following children, Mrs. Annie Bell Miller, Ripley; Roy Chunn, Blytheville, Arkansas; Thomas Chunn, New Albany; Mrs. Lillie Mae Smith, Ripley and Mrs. Christine Henry, Ripley.
R.L. Nance & Co. had charge of funeral arrangements.
* From "The Chunn Clan", "Mattie Ara Moore Chunn told Mrs. L.E. Chunn, her daughter-in-law, that three Chunns came to this country, namely, Thomas, who had a son named Thomas; Andrew who died in the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862) and is buried on the battlefield there; and another Chunn, name unknown. To date (1970) this story has not been verified on records, but at this time the writer believes they could have been Thomas Chunn and his three sons, Thomas, Andrew and George W.
According to previous information, Thomas, Sr. could have been born in Ireland, came to SC with his family, and then to TN where George W. was born (according to the 1860 Tippah Co., MS census). Andrew and George W. could have come to Tippah Co., MS between 1850 and 1860 where George W. married. Then Andrew could have gone on south and George W. never heard from him again. Then, George W. enlisted in 1861 and died that same year; Andrew died in 1862. Therefore, the trail is lost."
