George A. Chunn-New Albany, Mississippi
Services for George A. Chunn, retired farmer and blacksmith of New Albany were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Smallwood Funeral Home in charge.
Mr. Chunn, who was 80, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Shands Hospital. He was born in Union County and had lived in the Pleasant Ridge community until moving to New Albany about 10 years ago. He was a Baptist.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mattie Chunn; four sons, Jasper Chunn of Memphis, C.B. Chunn and James Chunn of Jackson, Mississippi and Austin Chunn of Batesville, Mississippi; four daughters, Mrs. J.Q. Self and Mrs. G.W. Hines of the Pleasant Ridge community, Mrs. Jewell R. Snyder of New Albany, and Mrs. Clara Prentice of Mirra Loma, California; five sisters, Mrs. Ila Stanford of Memphis, Mrs. Virgie Hodges of Ripley, Mrs. Marie Barton of Mantee, Mrs. Lois Lindsey of Seequick, Kansas, and Mrs. Annie Lee MaGill of Guntown; 25 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
* On Oct. 20, 1984 Mattie's daughter, Anivell Snyder, with whom she lived, had open house for Mattie's 99th birthday. She was very alert and talked with her visitors. Her daughter-in-law in Jackson, MS called to wish her happy birthday. She got up, walked with the aid of her walker to the phone, carried on a conversation with her, and walked back into the living room unaided. We teased her about being 16 and George 18 when they married, and she said that was correct. (Info from the "Chunn Clan".)
A photographer from the New Albany Gazette had been to make her picture. A great granddaughter was there, but cried and refused to have her picture made with Mattie. Avinell laughed and said that the little granddaughter later said it was too sad.
She got several gifts including birthday congratulations from President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan. She said she hoped she would live to see her 100th birthday.
On Sunday night, Oct. 21, she tried on one of her new gowns received at her birthday, walked into the living room to show it to Avinell and her husband, then walked back to her bedroom. She said she thought she was close enough to sit on the edge of her bed, but wasn't and fell to the floor, breaking her hip.
She was admitted to Union Co. Gen. Hospital in New Albany, Oct. 22nd. She was not in much paid until the aides moved her. While there, the nurses teased her about singing. Her daughter said that part of the time she was lucid and part under the influence of medicines, but she sang religious songs and prayed, just as she did at home. The nurses told her they would help her sing, and when they came in if she was singing, they sang with her.
On Nov. 4,1984, she died of pneumonia. Her funeral was preached by her former pastor, Rev. Respus Hall. He was very elderly, but she wanted him to preach her funeral when the time came. He was an old friend of the family, and he planned it the way he thought she would have liked it. The services were unusual due to the fact that instead of having someone sing a solo, he asked the song leader of the church to lead the congregation in singing "When the Roll is Called up Yonder", one of her favorites. After the sermon, he asked the congregation to sing "In the Sweet By and By". She would have liked it.
