He was in the battles of Fort Ridgely and Wood Lake. Joseph was wounded at Fort Ridgely and his name is listed on the monument there.He mustered out November 28, 1862. He joined the first regiment of Mounted Rangers, Co. K, in December 30, 1862 from Oshwa, Nicollet County, Minnesota. He mustered out December 10, 1863. He joined the second Regiment of Cavalry, Co. M, in January 4, 1864 at Lac Traverse, Minnesota and mustered out April 15, 1864. He was discharged for disability as a veteran.
