Documentation:
* Samuel Scott sells the land that his father owned before leaving Maryland for North Carolina.
* Land that was owned by William Scott, Sr; To sons Thomas and William and then to Samuel Scott. Samuel sells part to his cousin Zack and William Scott.
* On 2 April 1757 a land commission was issued on the petition of Samuel Scott to prove the boundaries of the tract "The Girls Portion."
* On 8 Oct. 1757 the land commission took a deposition from William Hall, aged about 41 years (Prince George's Co. Land Records, Liber PP, f.104).
* On 15 December 1763 Samuel Scott of Prince George's Co., millwright, leased to Thomas Finch, planter, the tracts "The Girls Portion" and "Addition to the Girls Portion," containing together 200 acres, for 15 years, provided that Finch builds a tobacco house of 40 by 22 feet and pays an annual rent of 450 pounds of tobacco (Prince George's Co. Land Records, Liber TT, f. 319).
* On 3 June 1766 Samuel Scott of Anne Arundel Co., millwright, sold to William Scott of Prince George's Co., for £150 all his interest in two tracts, "The Girls Portion," 100 acres, and "Addition to the Girls Portion," 100 acres, both located on the east side of Piney Branch in Prince George's County (Prince George's Co. Land Records, Liber TT, f. 563).
* On 12 May 1768 Samuel Scott of Prince George's Co., millwright, sold to Zachariah Scott for £65, all his interest in parts of two tracts, "Dan," 89 acres, and "William and Mary Increased," 182 acres, located in Prince George's County (Prince George's Co. Land Records, Liber BB#2, f. 254).
* Zacharish Scott is Samuel Scott's cousin, son of William Scott, Jr b/ 1704 brother to Samuel Scott father Thomas Scott b/ 1702 Superior Court Records Prince Geo. Md. Samuel Scott, came to North Carolina around 1765-70.
* I have found Lands Deeds in Rowan Co. North Carolina for Samuel and Nathan Scott. Samuel died bef. 1790 as Mary Jones Scott was on the 1790 Wilkes Co. Census, with Nathaniel, Richard, Samuel Scott.
* William Russell who married Rachel Scott was also on the 1790 Wilkes Co. Census, with Benjamin Russell and had several land Deeds near the land of Nathaniel Richard, and Samuel Scott, Jr.
* These Court Records clearly places Thomas Scott as a son of Samuel and Mary Jones Scott and William Russell who had married Rachel Scott daughter of Samuel and Mary Jones Scott.

Know ye that we trusting to your fidelity and prudence in examining Witness as well in behalf of Adam, Plaintiff and Thomas Scott, Defendant. We therefore Commission and empower you and each of you to call and causeto come before you the Clerk of County __Samuel Scott and diligently examine on the holy Evangelist according to law and their examinations so taken send certified from under your hand and seal to our next Superior Court of law to be held for the District at Morganton on the first day of March next to be given evidence in said suit. * Adam vs. Thomas Scott, Morgan Superior Court March 1789. W. Avett Att. The Council for the Plaintiff request the records may be searched in the County _ respecting the freedom of Adam and Priss his mother and being born free and not born a slave, but bound for years and see that the copies may be authenticated under the County seal and Sworn before the chairman presiding Justice of the County Court and lastly that the names of such others witness may be inserted in this Commission as Mr Henry Hereford or other agent for the plaintiff shall desire and their examinations taken respecting the plaintiff being born free and not a slave, may be in closed with this commission and directed under Seal to the Superior Court of Morgan. W A. Avery Att.for Plaintiff. State of Maryland Prince George County; 29 Oct 1788. Then came Samuel Scott aged 60 years thereabouts before the Subscriber Magistrate for the said county aforesaid, and made Oath on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God that about 37 Years past or thereabouts he intermarried with Mary Jones a daughter of Richard Jones, dec'd of Anne Arundel Co., Maryland and said State and about 5 or 6 years after said marriage with said Mary, his father-in-law Richard Jones gave him a Mulatto Woman by the name of Priss then about 17-18 years old and at the time Priss informed him that she was to be free at age 30. That in a few years after Priss became this Deponent's property She brought forth a son which she named Adam. That about 13 or 14 yearspast this Deponent and his wife and son-in-law William Russell removed to North Carolina and Carried with then the above mentioned Mulatto boy Adam. This Deponent further sayers that he never carried Priss to court after the birth of Adam for the Court to adjudge how long her said child should serve, intended that he should serve till the age of 25 and then be sat Liberty. This Deponent further sayers that there was most unhappily a misunderstanding between him and his wife and that he as before mentioned moved to Carolina without consulting him. This Deponent well knows that a brother of Priss by name of William and a sister of hers by name Mima were at Liberty and reputed to be free persons and this deponent further sayers that he sold the above mentioned Priss to a certain William Moss and told him at the time of sale that she was to be free at the age 30 years Sworn to before Thom. We have called and to come before us John McGee (Pliff and deft present) Who being sworn as the law directs Deposeth as follows; That the said Deponent was in company with Samuel Scott and others about 15 years ago or thereabouts and heard James Holmes ask said Scott if he would sell his boy Adam. Scott's reply'd he was born, free and would not sell him. It would look like selling one of my own children, as he (meaning said Adam) Was always raised in the house among the children and came of a free race of N____. and this Deponent no further saith. NC Census with Scotts, John McGee also had land Deeds near the Russells and Scotts in Rowan NC.)
Mary Jones Scott State of North Carolina Burke Co. March 24, 1789 We called, and caused to come before us Mary Scott, (Pliff and Defd present) Who being sworn as the Law directs, Deposeth and says as follows; That her father Richard Jones gave her two N____ woman the names Nan and Priss which was to be her property during her life and at her decease they were to be the property of her son Thomas Scott and that Priss is the mother of Adam now in dispute.
Q- Did you ever hear your father, or know from your own knowledge that Priss was to be free at 31 years of age. Ansr; No.
Q- by Defd. - Was your husband Samuel Scott present when your fathergave you the N___ Women Nan and Priss. Ansr;- No.
Q- Do you think Priss was a Mulatto Ansr;I cannot tell, she was as black as some that accounted full blood.

Rachel Scott Russell State of North Carolina Burke Co. March 24, 1789. We have called and caused to come before us Rachel Russell who being sworn in as the law directs Deposeth as follows; That her father Samuel Scott had a Negro by the name of Priss in his possession and that a Mulatto boy by the name of Adam, she believes was the son of said Priss.
Q. by Defd; Did you always hear and understand in the family and amongst our connections that the Negro Woman, Priss and the one by the name Nan was to be my property Ans; I always understood she was to be your property at Mothers Decease.
Q - by Deft Did you hear or know in Maryland or about the time we left that place that Priss was ever to be set free. Ansr.- No, I never knew any talk about it at the time we set out from Maryland.
Q - by deft Did you know how old Priss was at the time we set out from Maryland. Ansr- I am not certain, but thinks she was 35-36 years old.
Q - by Deft- Did you understand by what means and way our father Samuel Scott parted with Priss. Ansr; I understood that father bought a piece of land and gave Priss in pledge he would make payment for said land.
Q - by defd; How long after father left Maryland before he pledged said Priss Ansr; Perhaps two years or not quite so long.
Q - by Pliff Do you remember who was present in the room where Adam was born Ansr; My grandmother, mother and Priss

* Per DNA test I matched to Robert Scott a known 4th grandson to Nathan Scott's brother Thomas Scott my 4th great grandfather.
