NOTES: 
The parents of John Boone of the Cliffs are not known. It had been
generally accepted by Boone researchers that he was the son of John Boone and 
Mary Handley and he was identified as John Boone of Florida. This was based on 
Genealogical History of Our Ancestors by William K. Rutherford and The 
Descendants of Andrew Bohun by ___Berk. 
This is probably not the case. The recently published book Fair Were Their 
Dreams regarding John Boone of Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina by Mary 
Cole Farrow Long makes a strong case that John Boone of Florida was not the same 
man as John Boone of the Cliffs and she is probably correct. In the early days, 
what is now South Carolina would have been a part of that territory referred to 
as Florida (from which the present state of Florida was created), but Maryland 
was not.
