Marriage Records of Talladega Co., AL ........................................................................... NOTES: John Harrison BLANCHARD moved his wife, her mother Nancy Ann/Arline Arrington, and his young children from Talladega Co., AL, to Mt. Driskill in Bienville Parish, LA in about 1891. They attended the Mt. Zion Independent Presbyterian Church and they are buried in the cemetery behind the church, known as Driskill Cemetery. They farmed cotton and vegetables. When the lumber industry moved into the area, a lumber camp was established adjacent to their property. This gave the Blanchard's a captive market for selling fresh vegetables. John Blanchard eventually allowed the lumber company to cut trees on the undeveloped portions of his property. In 1905, John leased out his farm in Bienville Parish and moved the family by train to what was known then as Indian Territory, what is now called Oklahoma. His first daughter, Sallie Belle, married there. This was a year of flooding and malaria was rampant in that part of Oklahoma. Evidently, it was not worth the risk to stay in Oklahoma. The family returned at the end of the year to their Bienville Parish farm. Sallie Belle, now married, stayed in Oklahoma. Two of her brothers (George Carlton and John Moses) stayed there also for a couple of years before returning to Louisiana. Eventually, the Blanchard farm and most farms in the area were sold to the lumber company and are still in use today for raising trees. Katie Irene Sumner Arrington wrote in her Bible that the John Blanchard family is related to the Newton Crain "NC" Blanchard family (former Governor of Louisiana whose family resided in both Rapides and Caddo Parishes). She doesn't say how they are related and I have not been able to find any ties between the two families. The geographic pattern of their migrations to Louisiana are similar, although the Governor's family arrived in Louisiana well before the John Harrison Blanchard family. The middle name of John Harrison Blanchard's father is Newton, and John gave Newton as a middle name to one of his sons, who was called "NC", as was the Governor. Other than these similarities, I find no connection between the two families. The John Harrison Blanchard family also is not directly related to the numerous French Canadian Blanchards who were already resident in Louisiana when John Blanchard arrived.
