Documentation: Solomon CRUMBAUGH: Maryland German Church Records, Vol 16 (FS
Weiser) show he was baptized at St. Peter's Lutheran Church (now Grace Lutheran
Church) near Woodsboro. The record reads: Salomon, son of Conrad and Margaretha
Krumbach, b. 3 Nov 1779, bp 26 Dec 1779. Sponsors: parents. Christened 26
December 1779 in Maryland Letta Brock Stone in THE WEST FAMILY REGISTER (W.F.
Roberts Company, Inc., Washington, D.C. 1928) writes "...Solomon Crumbaugh, was
born in Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Conrad Crumbaugh of the same
place. Solomon Crumbaugh married Mary Winters and they lived on a large farm two
or three miles from Georgetown, where they had a saw and grist mill, a cheese
factory, all of which were cared for by many slaves. The present writer visited
the old homestead in 1925 and saw what remained of the farmhouse. It was of
ample dimensions, two stories high, with dormer windows, a central staircase and
two enormous stone chimneys at the ends of the house. These stones had been cut
by hand from rock cliffs on the farm and were so perfect that no cement was used
in the building of the foundation of a new house for which these chimneys were
torn down." Montgomery CRUMBAUGH: Twin of Eliza Crumbaugh. Montgomery came to
Illinois in 1841 and homesteaded in Section 31, Empire Township (250N 2495E).
Letta Brock Stone wites in THE WEST FAMILY REGISTER (W.F. Roberts Company, Inc.,
Washington D.C. 1928) "After Montgomery and Mary had been married three months,
they moved to Illinois in a two-horse wagon. They settled three and a half miles
south of LeRoy in McLean County. So little did he think of the value of farm
land in that day that at one time, when land was about fifteen dollars an acre,
Mr. Crumbaugh kept fifteen hundred dollars in the bank rather than lose it by
investment in cheap land. Seventy-five years later that same land sold for $300
an acre. The farm house which Montgomery Crumbaugh built is still standing. The
farm, in the family for eighty-five years, is now in the possession of Mr. and
Mrs. Enoch Brock, the latter a daughter of Mr. Crumbaugh. On July 15, 1880,
Montgomery Crumbaugh died and was buried beside his wife in a little country
graveyard, about two miles from the farm." Henry CRUMBAUGH: According to Eva
Crumbaugh Grizzelle in Notes on the Crumbaugh Family, 1919 (unpublished
manuscript located at Crumbaugh Library, LeRoy, IL), Henry Crumbaugh served on
Gen. Scott's staff during the Mexican War. He is buried at Oak Grove, Empire
Twp., McLean County, Illinois.
