Norma Clark says that Fielding and Elizabeth
came to Mo. in the late
1830s and that there was an older female
with them (shown in the 1840
Census). Since Vincent can't be found
in the 1840 Census for Mo. or Ky. it
is presumed that he must have died and
it is his wife, Samuels mother,
who went with them.
Jo Boley Wahlgren says:
Fielding left Carroll Co. in the late
1850's to go to the gold rush in
Colorado...and never returned. His wife
Elizabeth married a John Bowen
Dec. 6, 1870 in Little Compton, Carroll
Co. MO. She is in the 1860 census
living with William and his family in
Brunswick, Chariton Co., MO.
(Grandfather Frank (Fielding) Bouley
would have been three in 1870),
this would account for the stories dad
told, ie: " I believe dads mother
was a Bowen of Virginia" (he would have
been referring to grandpa's
grandmother).
However a note from Sue Silver, President
El Dorado County Pioneer
Cemeteries Commission silver1951@jps.net
says:
A Fielding W. Boley died Dec. 2, 1850
in El Dorado County, California,
during the height of the Gold Rush.
He may have died at a town called
Ringgold, which is south of Placerville.
A doctor was paid services for
attending him there to Dec. 2, 1850.
There is no marked grave for Mr. Boley
in any cemetery in El Dorado
County. The Ringgold Cemetery, or what's
left of it, is barely
recognizeable and has but two marked
graves at it's southernmost end
and two marked graves at its northernmost
end.
We can't say for sure that this is your
Fielding William Boley, but
thought we might pass this information
on to you.
I don't think the Colorado gold rush
(was it Pike's Peak?) started until
the late 1850s or early 1860s. I know
the "Washoe excitement" in
Nevada started about 1859, because so
many of our male residents went
there to mine and the wives and children
stayed here and were
enumerated on the 1860 census without
the husband/father.
If Fielding went anywhere in 1850 for
a gold rush, it has to be to
California. It truly created the greatest
migration of humanity in all of
history at that time, and our rivers
and creeks are the evidence of that
occupation - tailings everywhere still.
I think we're probably safe to presume
this is the same person. If I
find out anything more, I'll certainly
keep you in mind.
Sincerely Sue Silver

The 1840 Missouri Census Index shows
a Fielding Boley and a James R.
Boley-- both in Carroll County on the
same page of the census. If Fielding
Boley is the father of Samuel Boley
(as it appears),
then the move from Kentucky. to Missouri
can be narrowed to between
1834 and 1840.
Taken from the BOLEY family page:
3. Fielding William2 BOLEY (Vincent1)
(#345) was born in Kentucky,
1811.
He married Elizabeth MCDOWELL in Adair
City, Adair Co, KY, 07 DEC 1830.

was born in Kentucky about
1817. Elizabeth(44) was the daughter
of John MCDOWELL Sr and Phoebe
FRANKLIN. At 17 years of age Elizabeth
became the mother of Samuel
Franklin BOLEY in Kentucky, 17 SEP 1834.
At 20 years of age Elizabeth
became the mother of James Vincent BOLEY
in Kentucky, 1837. At 22
years of age Elizabeth became the mother
of William Alexander BOLEY Sr

Elizabeth McDowell was the daughter of
John and Phoebe
(Phobe)(Franklin) McDowell. Phoebe's
father was Edward Franklin. John's
parents were Ephraim McDowell and Elizabeth
(Agnes?) Burns. This
information came from an ancestor chart
compiled by Charles McDowell,
2210 N. Kilpatrick, Chicago, IL., dated
May 19, 1988. Also on this chart is
George McDowell, apparently the son
of John (and brother of Elizabeth
Boley) and under George is Julius Ephraim
McDowell, and his son Amos
McDowell, died 1950, Pasadena, TX (which
I assume is the father of the
compiler).

have meant 34, otherwise she
would have been born in 1826 making
her only 9 when Samuel was born
(unlikely)
1870 Census for Chariton Co., Mo. gives
the age of Elizabeth as 53.
She is in the household of Samuel Boley
Hillsdale, Montgomery co., Ill. (Deeds

On Oct 20 1857, Elizabeth Boley, heir-at-law
of Phoebe McDowell, dec'd,
of Carroll Co. Mo.. sold to George McDowell
of Montogomery, co. Ill.,
whatever interest she might have had
in land in Montgomery co .
As the name Elizabeth Boley appears
on various deeds in Carroll co.,
Mo, it is believed the Boley's moved
to Mo.

Sent to me by Jo Boley Wahlgren:
Elizabeth McDowell is the daughter of
John and Phoebe (Phebe?)
(Franklin) McDowell. Phoebe's father
was Edward Franklin. John's
parents were Ephraim McDowell and Elizabeth
(Agnes?) Burns. This
information came from an ancestor chart
compiled by a Charles
McDowell, 2210 N. Kilpatrick, Chicago,

would probably account for all the Phoebe's,
Elizabeth's, and Franklin's
we have popping up everywhere in our
'tree') Also on this chart is George
McDowell who apparently is the son of
John (and brother to Elizabeth
Boley) and under George is Julius Ephraim
McDowell. And his son is
Amos McDowell, died 1950, Padadena Texas
(which I would assume is the
father of the compiler).
Also from Jo Wahlgren:
By the way....I found the cemetery that
my g-grandmother Boley was
buried in when I visited home last.
Her name was Martha Ellen Bowlware
Boley and she was buried in the Hurricane
Cemetery between Hale and
Bosworth.
Anyway....I didn't get to visit with
my aunt Norma on that visit but after
talking with my mother later, my mom
said that the stone right next to
hers was Elizabeth Boley BOWEN!!!! She
was right there under my nose!!!!
This cemetery isn't hard to get to so
the next time I'm there I'll be sure
to take a picture of her stone. SHE
WAS RIGHT THERE AND I DIDN'T SEE
HER!!!
From Eric Gordon--I have just a little
about the McDowells. I believe
that the Father of Elizabeth McDowell
was John and his wife was Phoebe
Franklin and they were from Tennessee.
Elizabeth was born in Tennessee
also, I believe. I am going to have
to do some more research on them
myself because I think that we may be
related to them or some of their
ilk on my fathers side of the family.
they were all from Virginia and
Tennessee and then Georgia and Arkansas
and finially into southern
Missouri.
Fielding went to the Goldrush in Colorado in 1858 and never returned.
In 1870 Elizabeth re-married a John Bowen
in Little Compton, Carroll
Co., Mo.
Grandfather Frank (Fielding) Bouley
would have been three at the time
and this would account for the stories
dad told. ie: "I believe dads mother
was a Bowen of Virginia" (He would have
been referring to grandpas
grandmother.
