The upcoming divorce was published in the Princeton Clarion Newspaper 90 days previous to Sep 1881. She failed to show up in court, so Matthew got the divorce and custody of the children. Matthew had been wounded in the Civil War. He served in Company A, 28th Regiment, 1st Indiana Calvary and furnished his own horse and horse equipment. Mathew was 18 years of age, a farmer, when he enlisted for a term of 3 years on 19 Aug 1863. He served as a Private for the whole enlistment. He was mustered out on June 16, 1865 in Helena Arkansas. He had been hospitalized since Mar 16, 1865 for a debility. He was last paid on 30 Jun 1864. He was mustered out under provisions of a Telegram dated Washinton D.C. 1865 & signed W. A. Nichols, Adjutant Attorney General. Mathew drew a pension for his service in the Civil War. He was wounded in the hip.
