* Democratic Register of Lawrenceburg Feb. 10, 1871
Samuel McMullen, Sr., the paternal ancestor of our worthy townsman, Hugh D. McMullen, Esq, and an old resident of Manchester, where he is engaged in merchandising, was in town on Wednesday. Mr. McMullen, although on the shady side of a half a century, stands as erect as ever, and shows to the outward eye scarcely any signs of advancing age, save a slight addition of frost to his locks. He receives his goods and ships off his country produce at this point. May he long be spared to the community of which he has been so useful a member.
* 8-10-1871
There is a LONG article called Old Settler's Meeting at the Laughery Battle Ground that lists the name of Samuel McMullen as one of the Vice Presidents (officer of the day) along with 51 others. It was requesting the early settlers to the meeting.

Uncle Sam McMullen has just laid in a new stock of day goods and groceries, hardware, queensware and notions. If you want a new dress, a new pair of pants, or shoes, call and ask him, his clerk is very accommodating and will be pleased to show you through, and more so, to sell you a bill of goods.

* HISTORY OF DEARBORN AND OHIO COUNTIES 1885 FHL 977.21 H2h 1977; BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
SAMUEL McMULLEN, merchant, Manchester, is a son of Hugh and Nancy (McMath) McMullen, natives of Ireland. They came to America when young, and were married in Pennsylvania, where they resided until the fall of 1817, when they removed to Indiana and settled in Dearborn County. Further reference to their settlement is made in the history of York and Manchester Townships. Samuel McMullen was born in Franklin County, Penn., June 21, 1803, and was but a lad of fourteen when he came with his parents to Dearborn County. Here he assisted his father in rearing the little cabin in the primeval forest, and here his long life has been passed and witnessed the wonderful change in advancement and progress almost incredulous to behold. He assisted his father in opening up a farm, and remained with him until the age of twenty-three years. March 9, 1826, he was married to Nancy Dunn, a daughter of Micajah and Sarah Dunn, and to their marriage were born eight children, three of whom still survive. Mrs. McMullen died January 8, 1880, aged seventy-seven years. Mr. McMullen was married, August 19, 1883, to Mrs. Adda Dressel. Our subject is now one of the olderst living pioneers of Dearborn County, where nearly three score years and ten of his life have been passed --man's allotted time. His life has mainly been passed in farming. Since 1851 he has been engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was appointed postmaster by President Lincoln, and with the exception of a short time under the Johnson administration, he has since held the office until the present administration of President Cleveland, on the incoming of which he tendered his resignation. He has been identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church for over half a century.
* Tomb stone in Old Manchester cemetary reads: Samuel Mcmullen Died June 26, 1887 81 yr. 1 mo. 5 da. This would put him being born in May of 1806 while the above biographical sketch lists his birth date as being June 21, 1803.
* Lawrenceburg Register Newspaper, Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co. In. 16 Dec 1880 - Manchester Column:
Died, at her home on Tuesday evening, the 7th, Mrs. Nancy McMullen, aged nearly 78 years and buried Saturday, the 11th, at 11am. Funeral services by Rev. Plummer assisted by Rev. Cotton. She was the mother of eight children five dead and three living. She and her husband had traveled side by side for fifty years, and now she has left her husband desolate, and her children motherless. Aunt Nancy had been in poor health for some months past, but her death was unexpected. She was not bedfast until within a few days of her death. She has been a member of the M.E. Church nearly all her lifetime. We remember hearing her say on one occasion at class meeting that when she enlisted, she enlisted for life. She was a true Christian, a kind neighbor and a loving wife and tender and affectionate mother. She took great interest in the welfare of her little family, willing to sacrifice anything in their happiness. None knew her but to love her and in her death the family have lost a loving wife and mother, the church a faithful member, and the community a kind friend and neighbor. But God has claimed his own. She is gone! She is gone! The dust to its warm home beneath; the soul to its happy home on high.
* Tombstone in the Old Manchester Cemetary reads:

age 77 yrs.
