John McMullen, a short time ago, put up a new and spacious wagon making shop, where he is driving a good business, or rather a good business is driving him. A former citizen who knew John like a book, both as a man and a workman, and who now lives between Versailles and Madison, and about fifty miles from the latter place, quite recently called on John with a load of spole timber, and John must needs work into a wagon for him. He came forty or fifty miles for John to put him up a wagon. That, I should think, was quite equal to a College Diploma. (I am assuming this is the correct John McMullen for this announcement although it might have been Samuel's son. Not too likely, though, since he became a storekeeper for the Internal Revenewers.)

Died, on Saturday the 21st, Mr. John McMullen, from heart disease. He was aged 69 years had he lived till next August. He was married to his second wife. He had two children by his first wife and seven by his last, of whom two are dead. He leaves three brothers, a wife and seven children to mourn their loss. He had been a member of the M.E. Church for 40 years. He came to this place with his parents while young and has lived here ever since. The funeral took place at the M.E. Church building on the 22nd, at 2 o'clock p.m., services by Rev. Benjamin Plummer, assisted by Pummill and Mendal. His remains were interred in the Church burying ground. May the widow and children have the sumpathies of the whole community.

* Tombstone in Platt Cemetery, Manchester, Dearborn, Indiana reads:
Mary Ann Mullen w/o John

I believe this was John McMullen's wife, Mary Ann, and the date calculator was used to figure her birth date.

* The beginnings of my research came from the research originally done by Meda Garrigues around 1900 and carried on by Gertrude McMullen Heitmeyer in the 1970s. I obtained a copy of the little booklet Gertrude printed up for a family reunion in around 1975 - then travelled to Dearborn Co., met with Gertrude and filmed the original homestead homesite and many of the graves. My research started from there.
