General Notes (Husband)
* William Jelf was about five years old when his father, Thomas Jelf, died circa 1823-24. Between January 1829 and June 1830 William moved to Jennings County, Indiana with his mother, Jane. Shortly after moving to Jennings County Jane died. Probate and guardianship records place William in Jennings County until 1837. In 1840 he married Isabel Vanuy in Jennings County. William was not found in the 1850 census records for Jennings County or Bartholomew County, Indiana. In 1860 he was living in Bartholomew County with Isabel and their children. William enlisted in the 19th Indiana Infantry July 1861. He fought at Manassas, Bull Run and Antietam and then resigned December 1862. William was listed on the 1870 and 1880 census for Bartholomew County. March 1891 Isabell died. August 1891 William applied for a Civil War Pension. The 1900 Shelby County, Indiana census has William living in the household of his daughter, Isabel Jelf Fritz. William remained with his daughter until his death May 24, 1904. He was buried at Haw Creek Cemetery in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the same cemetery where Isabell was buried.

Death of Will Jelf
William Jelf died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Fritz, at 1:15 o'clock, Tuesday morning, May 24th as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage, aged 84 years 5 months 27 days. The deceased leaves four sons namely, Calvin, Will S., Walter C. and James; also two daughters Mrs. Henry Fritz and Mrs. Martha Reveille. The funeral will be from the home of Mrs. Fritz at 8 o'clock Thursday morning. Interment in the Haugh Creed Cemetery in Bartholomew County in charge of Edwards and Hageman.

General Notes (Wife)
* Isabella Vanwy, the daughter of John Vanwy and Mary Lattimore, was born in Indiana in 1823. She was most likely named after her grandmother, Isabella Carson Vanwye. She married William Jelf in Jennings County, Indiana at the age of seventeen. Isabella had eight known children in eleven years. Isabella had twenty-seven known grandchildren over a period of twenty-seven years. Twenty were born before her death, two twin girls were born the month that she died, and five that she did not know. When she died in 1891 at the age of sixty-seven, Isabella and William had been married for fifty years. She was buried in Haw Creek Cemetery, Bartholmew County, Indiana.

William, Walter and Martha stated that their mother was born in Pennsylvania on census records. This would indicate that Isabelle had a connection to Pennsylvania. Possibly they remembered family stories and thought their mother was born in Pennsylvania.
