Descendants of James J JESSUP
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES J1 JESSUP was born Abt. 1824 in Probably Bibb County, Georgia,
and died 04 Aug 1891 in Bibb County, Georgia. He married MISSOURI F
(OR J)
JONES 03 Jul 1862 in Bibb County, Georgia.
Notes for JAMES J JESSUP:

JAMES JESSUP's occupation is given as Farmer. His age is listed as 56
and
his state of birth is listed as Georgia. It is indicated that his father
and mother were both born in North Carolina. This information is used
to
forward the possibility that the JAMES J. JESSUP listed in the book
"Roster
of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861 - 1865" is one and the same
JAMES
JESSUP. The date of death was derived from the Confederate Roster record,
and therefore, may or may not be accurate. Further investigation does
reveal that JAMES JESSUP's middle name did, in fact, begin with a "J",
and
therefore, this initial has been added to the record and is assumed
correct. (See "Marriage Source Index" information) However, further
research to confirm into the identity of the Confederate soldier JAMES
J
JESSUP is needed before a positive connection between the two can be
established.
The census of 1880 only listed children of age 10 or less (children
that
would have been born since the last census), so since only five children
are listed in the family - HENRIETTA, SARAH J (JULIA), MAMIE L, MARTHA
and
REBECCA A (BECKY) - it is assumed that BARTOW and MAGGIE were older
than
10. A search of the 1870 census records should confirm or disprove
this
assumption. If it is found that BARTOW and MAGGIE were not older than
10,
then they might not have been born prior to 1880. Since most of the
1890
census has been distroyed by fire, this will be difficult to confirm.
It
is unlikely that BARTOW and MAGGIE died in infancy since their names
were
provided by related family members who remembered them as "Great Uncle
BARTOW" and "Great Aunt MAGGIE". However, they may have been attached
to
the "incorrect" family group by those who remembered them!

(Also recorded is "JESSUP, BENJAMIN - Private Mar. 15, 1861. Discharged

possibility that this person is a relative of James Jessup since they
enlisted together. Further research will prove of disprove this theory.)

MISSOURI F. JESSUP's occupation is given as "House Keeper". Her age
is
listed as 39 and her state of birth is given as Georgia. It is indicated
that her mother was born in North Carolia, but the birth state of her
father is not given. This could indicate that MISSOURI did not know
her
father, or simply that someone other than MISSOURI answered the Census
Taker's questions. Further research will be needed.

Notes for HENRIETTA JESSUP:
Little is known about Henrietta Jessup's life. She was a woman of large
size, with, I am told, an equally large heart. According to Maudys
M.
Martin Matthews, her granddaughter, she was a kind and loving woman,
well
liked by all who knew her.
Several pictures of her are in my possession, and computer-generated
copies
will be available in the near future for those who would like them.

The census of 1880 only listed children of age 10 or less (children

is
listed as "age 10", I feel fortunate to have found her. Especially
considering that in having found her as a child, I was able to add
her

blessing! Her state of birth is listed as Georgia. It should be noted
that only five children are listed in the family - HENRIETTA, SARAH
J

that the "SARAH J JESSUP" listed as "age 7" is the same person as "JULIA
JESSUP" and "REBECCA A JESSUP" listed as "age 6 months" is the same
person
as "BECKY JESSUP" that were remembered by related family members. It
is
also assumed that BARTOW and MAGGIE were omitted because they were

Information obtained from the 1900 United States Census
Census Place: District 6th, Town of Manchester, Bibb County, Georgia
National Archives Film: State No. T-1040 (Georgia), Roll No. 136 (Soundex
M635),
Census T623 (1900), Roll No. 180, Vol. 4, Enumeration District 19,
Sheet
21, Lines 89 through 93
The Census of 1900 lists HENRIETTA JESSUP as married to WILLIAM FRANKLIN
MARTIN, age 24 (may be inaccurate), for 8 years. This would result
in a
marriage year of about 1892. (Family records provided the year 1891.)
HENRIETTA and WILLIAM did not own a home, but were renting one in the
Town
of Manchester in Bibb County, Georgia. Her father and mother were both
born in Georgia. Her age is listed as 28, and her date of birth as
November 1871. This is in conflict with the information provided by
family
records and with the information recorded in the Census of 1880 where
she
is listed as "age 10". Family records indicate her year of birht as
1869,
and this is most likely the correct year. The census indicates that
HENRIETTA could not read nor write, so this may account for some of
the
inaccuracy of the ages and dates of birth. Additionally, it should
be
remembered that Census Takers were paid according to the number of
names
they gathered. Therefore, if they came upon a vacant house or a house
where only the children were home, they gathered the information from
a
neighbor or from the minor children. (No doubt, further research is
needed!) To compound the problem, the age requested by the Census Takers
was the age of the person at their last birthdays. Many respondents
provided the age they were going to be at their next birthday. In any
case, much of the information provided is NOT in agreement with information
I have obtained from family sources. The Census of 1900 information
is as
follows:
WILLIAM MARTIN, Head of Household, born in July of 1876, age 24 (Family
records offer a different birth month and two different birth years)
HENRIETTA MARTIN, Wife, born in November of 1871, age 28, no occupation
listed (Family records indicate her date of birth as November 1869)
MARY J MARTIN, Daughter, born in September of 1891, age 8, (Family
records
indicate her date of birth as September 1892)
MINNIE MARTIN, Daughter, born in August of 1896, age 3, (Family records
indicate her date of birth as August 1897)
TROY MARTIN, Son, born in November of 1899, age 6 months (Family records
indicate his date of birth as October 1898. This is a considerable
difference. Please note that while a person my confuse a three year
old
child for a four year old child, it is rather more difficult to mistake
a 6
month old child for a 18 month old child! The reason for the difference
is
unknown, but since it is more difficult to mistake the approximate
age of a
child the younger the child is, it is suspected that TROY MARTIN was,
indeed, 6 months old in the summer of 1900!)
Note: Family sources indicated that BARTOW MARTIN, HENRIETTA's first
son
(most likely named after her brother BARTOW JESSUP), was born in June
of
1895 and died in July of 1895. This is in agreement with the Census
of
1900 which indicates HENRIETTA had given birth to four children but
only
had three living children. The other five children - NELLIE IRENE,
OSCAR
LEE, OLLIE MAE, JULIA KATE and BENNIE RAY - were not born until after
the
year 1900.
An interesting note: On the same 1900 Census enumeration sheet, three
entries up, is the family of BENJAMIN AMERSON. Years later, TROY MARTIN
would marry NEELEY AMERSON. My mother would be their first child!
Notes for WILLIAM FRANKLIN MARTIN:
From the mid-1970's until the mid-1980's, my mother, Mary M. MARTIN
JANSEN,
dabbled at compiling the family genealogy. In the early 1990's, she
begun
compiling the family's history with a renewed sense of dedication and
determination. What you see here now has its beginnings in her work.
She
did not drive and was, therefore, unable to do "on site" research.
Most of
the information she obtained was accumulated through personal conversations
with living relatives. Unfortunately, soon after renewing her quest
for
the family's roots, she lost her sight to macular degeneration making
it
impossible for her to continue her research.
Four months prior to her death, she presented me with her "box of history",
an ordinary cardboard box filled with an odd assortment of notes --
some
neatly typed, others scribbled hurriedly on used envelopes and bits
and
pieces of scrap paper. Included were a few real jewels -- funeral memorial
books and a prized Blue Back Speller, yellowed with age, keepsakes
from a
generation past; graduation, wedding invitations, and birth announcements,
all carefully preserved in their origianl envelopes, cataloging the
lives
of those now living; flowers, ribbons, cards and letters, neatly pressed
between the pages of a well-worn album, rememberances of the life she
had
lived. As I began compiling the information she had so pains-takingly
gathered, I was amazed at the wealth of family history she had obtained.
Upon presentation of the box, she requested I continue the search, and
safeguard and preserve for future generations the information she had
entrusted into my care. Leaving no detail overlooked, neatly tucked
into a
manila envelope were pamplets and clippings on how to write and publish
a
family genealogy book. And so, here I sit, my task at hand, my mother's
spirit and sense of "family" leading the way...
Her handwritten and hand typed notes begin, "To my family -- Lest we
forget
from whence we come". The page is signed Mary M. Jansen and dated March,
1991. Her notes are dedicated "to my grandchildren and all the family".
I
dedicate what ever I accomplish to her and her desire to preserve the
family history...

The Census of 1900 lists WILLIAM FRANKLIN MARTIN as married to HENRIETTA
JESSUP, age 28, for 8 years. This would result in a marriage year of
about
1892. (Family records provided the year 1891.) His occupation was listed,
but could not be read. Since most of his neighbors were "mill workers",
it
will be assumed that he also worked in the mill. (A code appears to
have
been writen over his occupation - U-1-A 0-0-4. Similar codes are written
on the occupations of others on the sheet.) He did not own his own
home,
but was renting one in the Town of Manchester in Bibb County, Georgia.
His
father and mother were both born in Georgia. His age is listed as 24,
which would result in a birth year of 1876. His month of birth is
indicated as July. This is in conflict with the information provided
by
family records. My mother recorded WILLIAM FRANKLIN MARTIN's date of
birth
as September 15, 1872. However, the memorial book from his funeral
service
records his date of birth as September 14, 1874, making him 75 at the
time
of his death. I do not know the source of my mother's information,
nor the
source of the information recorded in the memorial book, nor the source
of
the information contained in the Census of 1900. Therefore, I am leaving
the date as my mother noted it until further research can be accomplished.
The census indicates that WILLIAM could not read nor write, so this
may
account for some of the inaccuracy of the ages and dates of birth.
Additionally, it should be remembered that Census tTakers were paid
according to the number of names they gathered. Therefore, if they
came to
a vacant house or a house where only the children were home, they gathered
the information from a neighbor or from the minor children. (No doubt,
further research is needed!) To compound the problem, the age requested
by
the Census Takers was the age of the person at their last birthdays.
Many
respondents provided the age they were going to be at their next
birthdays. In any case, much of the information provided is NOT in
agreement with information I have obtained from family sources. The
Census
of 1900 information is as follows:
WILLIAM FRANKLIN MARTIN is interred at Forsyth Cemetary in Forsyth,
Monroe
County, Georgia. His funeral was held in the Community Church at Person's
Mill on September 22, 1949, at 4:00 PM. The service was officiated
by
Preacher Mooder. FACE TO FACE WITH JESUS and NEARER MY GOD TO THEE
were
sung by Mrs. Tim Frazier, Jr. and Mrs. Tom Frazier. The organist was
Mrs.
Cathy E'Dalgo. Serving as pallbearers at his service were Clifford
Amerson, W. L. Fountain, Lenard Watts, Howard Bass, Emitt Farr and
Willie
Woodard.
He was known as WILL to his family members and close friends. (Information
obtained from original copy of WILLIAM FRANKLIN MARTIN's memorial book,
compiled at the time of his death.)
This is probably WILLIAM in 1880. Unfortunately, he is not with his
parents
and this transcription doesn't clearly identify his relationship to
the
KIMBALL family he is living with. There were many more KIMBALLls in
the
neighborhood, but no other MARTINs close by.

The Census of 1900 lists MINNIE MARTIN as "age 3", with a birth date
of
August 1896. This does NOT agree with family records which record her
date
of birth as August of 1897. Her parents, HENRIETTA and WILLIAM MARTIN
are
shown as married for 8 years. This would result in a marriage year
of
1892. (Family records provided the year 1891.) HENRIETTA and WILLIAM
did
not own a home, but were renting one in the Town of Manchester in Bibb
County, Georgia. Both HENRIETTA's and WILLIAMS's parents were born
in
Georgia. HENRIETTA's age is listed as 28, and her date of birth as

In the 1880 Census, Martha is listed as "age 2" and her state of birth
is
given as Georgia. The census only listed children of age 10 or less
(children that would have been born since the last census), so only
five
children are listed in the family - Henrietta, Sarah J (Julia), Mamie
L,
Martha and Rebecca A (Becky) - therefore, it is assumed that the "Sarah
J.
Jessup" listed is the same person as "Julia Jessup" and "Rebecca A.
Jessup"
listed is the same person as "Becky Jessup" that were remembered by
related
family members. It is also assumed that Bartow and Maggie were omitted
because they were over 10 years of age at the time of the census. However,
they may have been attached to the "incorrect" family by those who
remembered them!
Children of MARTHA JESSUP and UNKNOWN SPEAR are:
i. RAY3 SPEAR, b. Abt. 1898; d. Bef. 1978.
ii. HERBERT SPEAR, b. Abt. 1898; d. Bef. 1978.
6. REBECCA A2 JESSUP (JAMES J1) was born Abt. 1880 in Georgia, and died

The census of 1880 only listed children of age 10 or less (children

are listed in the family - Henrietta, Sarah J (Julia), Mamie L, Martha
and

in
the 1880 Census as "age 6 months" is the same person as "Becky Jessup"
that
was remembered by related family members. Likewise, 7 year old "Sarah
J.
Jessup" is assumed to be "Julia Jessup". It is assumed that Bartow
and
Maggie have been omitted because they were over 10 years old. Becky's
state of birth is listed as Georgia. However, they may have been attached

NEELEY
BELLE AMERSON 09 Nov 1920 in Forsyth, Monroe County, GA, daughter of
BENJAMIN AMERSON and ANNIE PRITCHETT.
Notes for TROY SANDERS MARTIN:
TROY SANDERS MARTIN served in World War I, and returned to his home
town to
marry a school mate, NEELEY BELLE AMERSON, he had known for years.
(The
Census of 1900 confirms the fact that TROY MARTIN and NEELEY AMERSON
had
known each other from early childhood.) It was a marriage that would
last
for over fifty-five years.
TROY and NEELEY MARTIN's golden (fiftheth) wedding anniversary was
celebrated by a dinner held in their honor at the home of their youngest
son, MACK MITCHELL MARTIN, in Fort Valley, Peach County, Georgia. Their
five surviving children, twenty-one grandchildren, and five
great-grandchildren were in attendance to celebrate the longevity of
their
union. (Information obtain from original newspaper clipping and
congradulatory note from US House of Representatives, 3rd District
Representative Jack Brinkley.)
TROY and NEELEY MARTIN resided at 1321 Joseph Avenue, Warner Robins,
Houston County, Georgia, until shortly before their deaths.
TROY SANDERS MARTIN and his wife, NEELEY BELLE AMERSON MARTIN, died
on the
same day, October 24, 1979, at Houston County Medical Center in Warner
Robins, Georgia. Even though they enter into eternal life on the same
date, they died of natural causes. TROY surcame to bilateral
bronchopneumonia, complicated by severe chronic lung disease. NEELEY
surcame to hypostatic pneumonia complicated by uremia, diabetes, and
generalized arteriosclerosis. "NANNY" MARTIN preceeded TROY MARTIN
into
Eternity by only a few hours, "MISS NEELEY" entering Eternity at 9:55
AM,
TROY at 10:15 PM. As they had lived their lives together, so they were
united, one to the other, even unto death. (Information obtained from
certified copies of death certificates.)
Funeral arrangements were handled by McCullough Funeral Home in Warner
Robins, Houston County, Georgia. The service was held in McCullough's
Chaple of Flowers, on October 26, 1976, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Bill
Beshears officiating. TROY and NEELEY were interred, side-by-side,
at
Magnolia Park Cemetery, Warner Robins, Houston County, Georgia.
(Information obtained from original funeral memorial book.)
I have several pictures of TROY SANDERS MARTIN, including one of him
in his
World War I uniform, from which computer-generated copies will be available
in the near future for those who want them.
My grandfather's birth is listed as "TROY S. MARTIN of Houston Georgia,
October 10, 1898" in the on-line International Genealogy Index. Reference
Film #2034656. I do not know whether the date recorded is in reference
to
the date of entry or the date of birth. Also note that the county of
birth
is recorded as Houston County not Forsyth County. I do not know the
source
of the IGI information, so further research is necessary to resolve
the
differences.
