Notes:
* Leroy and Mary moved to Georgia from Greenville, SC, sometime between 1830 and 1840, as information shows in census records. On Dec 21, 1843, he accepted a call as pastor of Van Wert Baptist Church, Paulding County, GA, where he served until 1846. He was dismissed by letter in that year, along with several other church members who were "moving from the neighborhood." He then moved to Carroll County and, in 1847, was one of the founding members and first pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church (now Midway Macedonia Baptist Church) near Villa Rica. In 1849, he and other pastors constituted Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the same area. In 1858, he accepted a call as pastor of Centralhatchee Baptist Church in Heard County and moved there sometime before 1860. By 1870, he was back in Carroll County where he died on April 5, 1875, "in his 78th year," according to his obituary. Leroy was affected by palsy several years before his death and was described as a "poor man who always had to perform manual labor." His wife, Mary, followed him in death six months later. Their burial places are unknown. Leroy's will was made and recorded in Carroll County.
* Mary's surname is also seen as "Thompson" and "Thomson."
* In the absence of records and concrete proof, the name of Leroy's father is the subject of much controversy among McWhorter researchers. However, descendants of Leroy and Mary feel that Leroy's naming his first son "Moses Allen" and the absence of any descendants named "Landon" are powerful indications that Leroy's father was Moses, one of three sons (Moses, Landon and John) of Moses McWhorter and his first wife (name unknown), of Edgefield Dist., SC. This earlier Moses was also the father of Allen Marlin McWhorter (by his second wife, Elizabeth Puckett), claimed by family members living in Carroll County to be Leroy's uncle.
* Allen Marlin's ancestors and descendants are well documented. Of the other two sons of Moses of Edgefield and his first Wife: John's Bible records have been found and published and do not list a son named Leroy, and no records of Landon as an adult have been found. He is thought by many noted researchers to have died young. Research by Kathy Gregory shows that Leroy and Mary McWhorter were members of Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Greenville before they moved to Georgia.
