  6. 1942, Mary Prudence McHugh, A daughter of Mary Prudence McHugh, ? Next transcription from handwritten page written by a daughter of Mary Prudence McHugh when she spoke with her mother in 1942 obtaining family history information--for informational sake and clarity, I am listing the following references: "Mama" is Mary Prudence McHugh born 1858. "Papa" is Gustavius Leonidas Williams born 1855. "Grandma" is Elizabeth Garner born 1828. "Grandpa" is James Perry McHugh born 1825 in Gwinnett Co., GA "Mama was Mary Prudence McHugh--was born in Dorsey, GA., Morgan County--of James Perry McHugh and Elizabeth Garner McHugh in the year 1858. Grandma's mother was Harriet Garner. (possibly the wife of Samuel Garner?) Her father died and her mother married Perdue. She had 2 half sisters, Adeline and Anne and 1 half brother Sidney Perdue. Billy Cox married Betsy --her mother's sister--and they raised Grandma. (Grandma?) was born in Morgan County. Grandpa was born in Gwinnett County. Papa Gustavius Leonidus (Williams) was born in Walton County. Grandpa married Grandma -- married at Billy Cox's house in Morgan County, (GA.) on a plantation between Rutledge and Madison, GA. Cousin Vie Hansen was Billie Cox's daughter and Grandma's first cousin. Billy Cox was Grandma's Uncle. Mama had 5 brothers (Notes: Unreadable, possibly a nickname -- looks like Sanlk with an insert and then) Benj. Franklin, Bartley, Grant, Charlie, Edw. Grandpa's mother was Mary Pritchett. Grandpa's father was Charles McHugh. End of transcription from handwritten source of 1942, daughters of Mary Prudence McHugh, Williams as they spoke to their mother.
  7. "1860 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," 1860, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. James McHugh is listed as "James McCugh" and is shown as having 3 children between the ages of 6 and 18. He had two slaves valued at $900, $1,300 in cash and $25 in personal property.
  8. "1871 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1871, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives. The 1871 Morgan County Tax Digest lists James McHugh as having 3 children between the ages of 6 and 18 years. It shows he had 5 hands employed between the ages of 12 and 65 years. In 1871, James had 534 acres of land in Morgan County valued at $2,670 (that comes to $5.00 per acre). The value of all his other property was $475.
  9. "1878 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1878, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. The 1878 Morgan County Tax Digest shows James as owning 828 acres.
  10. "1883 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1883, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. The 1883 Tax Digest shows James owning 964 acres and employing 9 hands.
  11. "1885 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1885, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. The 1885 Tax Digest lists James S. McHugh. This is the first time we saw his middle initial in any records. This Digest shows that James owned 1,142 acres valued at $4,568 (that's only $4.00 an acre). The 1885 Digest also lists a company by the name of McHugh & Dickson. The company owned something worth $125 in town, although we don't know which town. It may be Rutledge or Madison. In addition, the 1885 Digest lists William McHugh as owning 100 acres and Bart owning 60 acres. Bart is listed in other records as Barton McHugh.
  12. "1890 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1890, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. The 1890 Morgan County Tax Digest lists James McHugh as owning 1142 acres valued at $5,568 (that's $4.88 per acre) and $417 in horses and mules. The 1890 Digest also indicated that James owned the Iron Works Foundaries and the company owned $380 worth of property. William McHugh was listed owning 100 acres and Barton owning 68 acres. Benjamin McHugh and Edward M. McHugh were listed, but owned no property.
  13. "1895 Morgan County, GA Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1895, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. We finally established from a list of Morgan County deaths that James McHugh died on February 7, 1896. This death date is inscribed on his grave marker. However, the 1895 Morgan County Tax Digest shows the "James McHugh Estate" as owning 1,142 acres. It's possible he may have actually died in 1895.
  14. "1897 Morgan County, Ga Tax Digest," Morgan County, GA, 1897, Printed Tax Digest, Morgan County, GA Archives, Madison, GA. The 1897 Tax Digest lists the James McHugh Estate as owning 732 acres, Mrs. Elizabeth McHugh owning 210 acres, William McHugh owning 60 acres and Columbus McHugh owning 110 acres. B. F. McHugh and Eddie McHugh were listed in the Digest, but owned no acreage.
