William Augustus "Gus" Bassett and his wife "Candy" lived for a part
of
their married life in the Forsyth area according to family lore. At
the time of
his father's death in 1897, Gus inherited substantial property in Fort
Valley where he grew peaches for many years. His obituary, printed
Jan. 7, 1929
in the Macon Telegraph reads;
GUS BASSETT
Fort Valley, GA, Jan 6
Gus Bassett, one of the oldest Peach Co. farmers, died early today.
The
funeral will be held Moday afternoon at 2 o'clock. A brother, Charlie
Bassett, of Minnesota and a sister, Miss Fannie Bassett of Fort Valley
and
four sons survive.
