NOTES on Elisha Gordon BASSETT:
Elisha Gordon Bassett was born in Ft. Valley, attended local schools
and
graduated from Mercer University, returning home to farm. He met his
wife-to-be, Lena Ezell, at the County fair in Macon. They were married
in
Byron in 1889.
Elisha died of pneumonia at age 27, just months following his marriage
to
Lena, and before the birth of their only child, Nellie. His death was
a
great loss to the family and his community, as he was a greatly admired
young man. He is buried in Shiloh Methodist Churchyard, Byron, GA.
His obituary read, in part;
"Lish" Bassett. as he was familiarly known by his many friends, was a young
man of many noble traits; a warm-hearted friend, a true Christian, a
most
genial companion; he made friends of all with whom he came in contact.
He
was a young farmer with a bright future before him, having inherited
an
unusual amount of pluck and energy from his father. He was a tireless
worker and gave promise of being one of the largest landed estate owners
in this
section."
Following Lish's death, Lena moved back to Byron to live with her parents
and for a while, Lena was the postmistress of the tiny Byron Post Office.
Lena
married a second time, to William Wallace Peavy and had two more children
and a happy marriage, according to her grand-daughter.
NOTES on Nellie Gordon BASSETT:
Nellie was a posthumous baby, born following the early death of her
father, Elisha Gordon Bassett. She lived as a small child in Byron,
in the home of
her maternal grand-parents and as the much loved and doted on grand-child
of both the Bassetts and Ezells.
