GONE--Mr. Samuel McMullen left the past week for his home in
California.
he has been paying his brother and sister a short visit, after an
absence
of fourteen years.  His brother James (Major Rustin,) has been priding
himself on being the biggest of the many Mc's, but he has given it up
now, his California brother weighing 250, twenty-five pounds more than
his best.

PRESENTS--In our last, we spoke of Mr. Samuel McMullen, of California
paying his folks a visit.  On his way back he expressed from New York,
one hundred dollars to his mother, fifty to his unmarried sister and
twenty to his youngest brother.  This is right.  The brothers here
(James, Daniel and George,) have helped their mother in her old age and
Sam is determinded that he will be on that same list.

Samuel W. McMullen
This pioneer gentleman, whose portrait appears in this work, was born
in
Dearborn county, Indiana, January 24, 1831, and is the oldest son of
Daniel H. and Nancy Fox McMullen.  He resided at his native place till
1854 and during that time was educated at the common schools of the
county.  May 5th of the last-named year he sailed from New York City on
the steamer  ILLINOIS to Aspinwall, and thence to San Francisco on the
steamer SONORA, arriving May 31st.  He immediately proceeded to the
mines
in Tuolumne county, working at Montezuma.  after mining till the spring
of 1857, he went to Green Valley in Sonoma county, where he remained
two
years.  In the year 1859 he removed to Mendocino and farmed one year,
when he engaged in the liquor business in the town of Point Arena.  In
1865 he erected the Point Arena House, which he conducted until 1869,
and
then disposed of it to William Shoemake.  Mr. McMullen has remained
permanently in the place since coming, with the exception of six months
in 1878, which he, with his family, spent in Healdsburg.  July 3, 1864
he
was married to Jennie Brown, a native of Missouri, born January 8,
1849.
Their living children are George, born December 5, 1865; Julia Belle,
born June 4, 1867; Abby, born November 10, 1868; Rockwell, born January
18, 1871.  THey have lost five children.

Mrs. Jane McMullen, a former resident, died at San Francisco Aug. 27,
1893.  she was survived by two sons: George and Rock McMullen, and two
daughters:  Mrs. Abbie Wehrle and Miss Jewie McMullen.  Her funeral was
at Point Arena Aug. 30, 1893
Samuel, Jennie and the six children who died very young are buried in
the
Greendale Cemetery, Manchester, Mendocino Co., Ca.  Their grave plot is
close to the entrance on the right hand (west) side of the road..
