A woman who was born in Monterey almost 82 years ago and whose entire
life has been spent on and about the peninsula died at her home 732
Abrego
street yesterday. Mrs. Josepha Vasquez stood out as one of the
leading
pioneers of this section of the state.
Leading up to the death of Mrs. Vasquez was an illness of three months.
She passed away in her home that stands on the very lot on which she
was
born. She died amid surroundings, which had been hers from the
day of her
birth 82 years ago next April.
Monday morning funeral services start from the home on Abrego street
at
9:30. Services continue at 10 in San Carlos church with burial
following in
the family plot in the Catholic cemetery. She will be laid beside
her
husband, who during life, was known as one of the finest horseman in
the
country and foreman of the Sargent ranch in Carmel Valley. His
death
occurred five years ago.
In addition to two brothers, two sisters, two daughters, and two sons,

grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren survive the Monterey pioneer.
Of her brothers Pete Artellan lives in Monterey and Al Artellan in
San
Francisco. Her two sisters Mrs. Juana Laieno and Mrs. Mary butler
are
residents of Watsonville. Her daughters are Mrs. Charles Fancer
of
Arizona and Mrs. Tommy Crawford of Monterey. Tony Vasquez of
San
Miguel and Dave Vasquez of Carmel are her sons.
This evening at 7 o'clock members of the Guadalupe lodge of San Carlos
church are meeting for prayer at the home. Friends are also welcome.
Freemans undertaking parlors are in charge.

Michael Artellan, a lifelong resident of Monterey, died Monday morning
at his
home on California Street, the cause of death being consumption.
At the
time of his death he was 43 years and 5 months old. He leaves
a wife and
four children to mourn his loss. Deceased was well known in Monterey.
And
the funeral, which took place this afternoon, was attended by a large
concoarse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The funeral ceremony
was
conducted by Rev. R. M Mestres of San Carlos church.

A host of friends will be grieved to learn of the death last night
at the
family home of Mrs. Juanita Leoni, pioneer resident of the Pajaro Valley.
Death was due ailments, incident to her to her advanced age.
She was
confined to her home for the past two years.
Mrs. Leoni was born at Monterey and was aged 82 years. She had
lived in
Watsonville for the past 10 years. She was a loving mother and
had a large
circle of friends throughout the Monterey bay section. She was
a devout
member of St. Patrick's Catholic church.
Six daughter and two sons survive to mourn her passing. They
are Mrs.
Jennie Vyeda, Mrs Ida East and Mrs. Rose Silva all of Watsonville;
Mrs. Nellie
Taglio of Gustine, Mrs. Eugene Morelli of Santa Cruz, Miss Emma Leoni
of
San Francisco; John Leoni of Aptos and Al Leoni of Watsonville.
There also
survive one sister Mrs. Mary Butler of Watsonville and one brother
Albert
Artellan of San Francisco, and 26 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at Whites
funeral
home ; thence to St. Patrick's church where last rites will be held
at 9:30.
Burial will be in the family plot in the Watsonville Catholic cemetery.
The
rosary will be recited at the funeral chapel Thursday evening at 8
o'clock.
Pallbearers were all grandsons, Paul Rubis, Charlie berrie, Anthony
Vyeda,
Louis Taglio, Romero Taglio, and Louie Berrie.

Pete Artellan 54, a native of Monterey and popular member of a rapidly
dwindling group of local "old timers" died last night at the Carmel
Hospital
following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 9
o'clock Monday
morning at the T A Dorney chapel on Tyler Street, followed by services

San Carlos Church at 9:30. Burial will be in the family plot
in Monterey

Pacheco House. Death was due to consumption, which snuffed out
the life
of the deceased in his fifty-eighth year.
A large family mourns his passing. He leaves three sisters, Mrs.

Vasquez, Mrs. Jennie Butler, and Mrs. John Leoni, four brothers Alphonso,
Peter, Julius, and Bonapart, and three children.
The funeral will take place at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday morning from the

Julian Artellan, old time resident of Monterey, passed away Sunday
morning
at the family home on Lighthouse avenue in New Monterey. He was
born in
Monterey 53 years ago, married to Bessie Escobar, also a native
Montereyan , and to them were born three daughters and one son, who
survive their father. Mrs. Artellan passed away nearly fourteen
years ago.
The surviving daughters are Miss Julia Artellan, Mrs. Tony Castro,
and Mrs.
William Diaz all residing in Monterey. The son Sidney, who lives
in Monterey.
Three sister's Mrs. E Vasquez, Mrs. John Leoni, Mrs. J Butler, and
two
brothers Pete and A W also survive him.
The funeral will be held from Freeman's Undertaking parlor Tuesday
morning, with services at San Carlos Catholic church at 10:30.
Interment
to be held in the Catholic cemetery.
Mr. Artellan is known as one of Monterey's most enthusiastic baseball
fans,
never having missed a game in years, and following the home team when
they journeyed to cross bats with teams in nearby towns and even to
San
Francisco. He encouraged the youngsters in their vacant lot games,
often
picking out boys who later their skill on full-grown teams many years
later.
